Gorge Wind Forecast

Complicated weather dynamics over the next several days takes us far from Classic Gorge Setup. Even so, we’ll have westerlies Friday through Sunday. Models have been inconsistent on the forecast for Sunday, so we’ll just keep watching them.

Thursday’s the most complicated forecast day. A little offshore low hangs around the Oregon Coast today distracting us while another low moves in from northern California to the Washington desert in the afternoon. The general result of this is unstable air and a chance of thunderstorms with lots of lightning. Fortunately, it’s unlikely you’ll be on the river: we’ll have easterlies that peak at 20-25 from Stevenson to Viento late morning before fading to calm wind everywhere this afternoon. You may find east 5-8 east of The Dalles later, but you’ll also find more storms. River flow is 76,700cfs and temp is 70 degrees.

Unstable air continues on Friday morning, especially east of the Cascades. Offshore high pressure builds too. Resulting wind looks like 20-23 from Viento to The Dalles early in the morning with 10-13 east and west of there. Afternoon wind: 24-27 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 14-17 to Biggs and 5-10 farther east. That said, you’ll want to stay away from the eastern Gorge until the thunderstorms clear. If it’s cloudy, don’t drive!

A ridge of high pressure builds late Friday into Saturday morning, and then a trough approaches from the northwest in the afternoon. This is the kind of setup that can lead to unexpectedly strong late-day westerlies. Let’s keep an eye on it. Current forecast is morning wind at 14-17 from Viento to Hood River with 5-10 Stevenson and The Dalles and light wind east. Westerlies jump mid-afternoon to 26-29 from Stevenson to Avery. Let’s throw a “+” on that, just in case. As of right now, it looks like Portland and even Hood River will be buried in clouds on Sunday. You’ll want to go east of there for 20-23. sadly, that’s a giant drop from an earlier forecast of 30-35+ for Sunday.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified – swell forecast courtesy of National Weather Service). Thursday: LTW/LTW/LTS, NW swell 5′ at 12 seconds. Friday: LTW/LTW/N10-15, NW swell 3′ @ 10 seconds. Saturday: LTW/LTW/N10-15, W 3′ @ 10. Jones Thursday: nope. Friday: 10-13. Saturday: 15-18. Sauvie’s Thursday: nada. Friday: 12-15. Saturday: 9-12.

Road and Mountain Biking

Looks like we have a pretty good chance of some intermittent rain showers over the next five days. Fingers crossed for brown pow! Chipseal is good to go between Mosier and Rowena crest. Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through September 13th. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). As for Kreps/SDS lands… they haven’t issued a closure yet!

All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
