Gorge Wind Forecast

The most active weather pattern we’ve seen since spring takes hold of the Northwest for the next four days or so. A wide variety of wind conditions will result, and the western Gorge will spend a significant portion of the time in the clouds and rain.

For Saturday, offshore high pressure combines with inland low pressure and a trough approaching in the afternoon for a couple of things: a good chance of afternoon thunder, and a good chance of strong westerlies ahead of incoming rain. Early wind was generally in the “light” range most locations with low double digits from Viento to Swell. This holds through early afternoon. Sometime mid-afternoon, ahead of incoming rain, the wind jumps to 27-31 from Stevenson to Avery, filling in to Rufus and Roosevelt late afternoon or early evening. With rain starting in the western Gorge around 5pm, there will be a short window to jump on these strong, gusty westerlies. River flow is 82,400, and temp is 71 degrees.

Sunday brings low clouds to the western Gorge, keeping the wind down. Clouds stick around all day, meaning you’ll be headed to the eastern Gorge for stronger wind. Where exactly? East of the low clouds – go outside, look up. The wind will be gusty 12-15ish form Stevenson to Doug’s all day with rain falling at least to Stevenson, and maybe to Viento. East of The Dalles

Monday looks rainy all the way to The Dalles. Westerlies dip in response. Light wind early (good for fishing!) picks up to 8-12 through the whole Gorge in the afternoon. Tuesday also looks showery with westerlies in the teens in the afternoon. Remember that this kind of dynamic weather often results in day-to-day changes in the forecast.

Road and Mountain Biking

Upper 8 Track in Post Canyon is now closed due to logging. Looks like we have a pretty good chance of some intermittent rain showers over the next five days. Fingers crossed for brown pow! Chipseal is good to go between Mosier and Rowena crest. Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through September 13th. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). As for Kreps/SDS lands… they haven’t issued a closure yet!

All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
