Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

We’re in for another week of what meteorologists call “active” or “progressive” weather. Mt. Hood will bear the brunt of a series of storms over the next week. Many of these will tap into an atmospheric river of some sort or other, leading to significant moisture availability. Also in play will be a strong and consolidated jet stream that will enhance precipitation and wind.

For Friday, it’ll be warm and drizzly in the morning and wind and sunny in the afternoon, most likely. However, strong orographic (terrain-enhanced) support could keep the clouds around. The snow level will be 12,000′ during the day and 6500′ after midnight. Just a trace to 0.2” rain will fall during the day. It should be dry and clear overnight. Wind will be W 35 in the morning, WSW 45-55 in the afternoon, and SW 40-80 (depending on elevation) after midnight.

Saturday starts with rain and switches to snow as a beast of a cold front drops down from the northwest. Strong offshore high pressure will enhance the wind speed, possibly leading to lift shutdowns… the direction isn’t quite right for this, but let’s still have it on the radar. The snow level will be 6500′ early, 4000′ by 10am, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 500′ overnight. About 1.7” water value (WV) will fall during the day. That’ll probably be 0.5-0.7” rain followed by 0.7-1.0” WV of increasingly dry snow. Call it 5-9” during the day. Overnight, another 0.3” WV falls on the mountain, for 3-5” of powder. Wind: SW 40-70 early, SW 35-55 from midday on, NW 30 in the evening, and NW 20 after midnight.

Sunday brings mostly cloudy sky with light snowfall. The snow level will be 500′ early, 1000′ in the afternoon, and 0′ after midnight when there won’t be any moisture around. About 0.1-0.2” WV falls during the day, for 1-2” of powder. Another 0.1” falls in the evening, for another inch. Wind will be NW 20 during the day, W 15 in the afternoon, and NW 25-30 overnight.

As of right now, Monday looks clear and cold on the mountain. Tuesday will be dry during the day with snow, then rain in the evening. However, models are far from agreeing on the details. It does appear that super-strong NW wind will arrive sometime Tuesday afternoon, wreaking havoc on the slopes. If the wind verifies, we’ll likely see some trees fall, and we’ll definitely see widespread tree litter (branches and such) on the slopes. For the rest of the week: additional strong systems of varying precipitation type. Not a whole lot of models agreement on the details. Enjoy the ride!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light easterlies on Friday morning give way to westerlies after noon. Expect gusty 18-23 from Viento westward and The Dalles eastward with gusty 8-13 in the central Gorge. Sunday starts with W 7-10 through the whole Gorge. Afternoon westerlies pick up to gusty 10-13 in the west and gusty 20-23 from Mosier to Arlington.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s snowy or muddy on all the trails now. Please leave them alone so you don’t do damage. The only exception may be the lower parts of Syncline, but they are probably muddy enough that you will do damage too. Think about gravel or road biking today, as temps should make it into the upper 40’s with just-sprinkles falling from the sky.
