Mt. Hood Forecast

Snow is on the way for Wednesday. Then it’s dry weather Thursday and back to light snowfall for Friday followed by another dry day on Saturday and flurries or light mixed precip on Sunday. Next week: hints of pineapples, but definitely not guaranteed yet!

Expect a snowy day if you’re headed to the hills on Wednesday. The snow level will be 3500′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1500 to 2000′ under clear sky after midnight. Light snowfall in the morning really picks up mid-afternoon. Expect 0.6” to 0.7” water equivalent (WE) by sunset, for 6-7” of relatively fluffy and evenly distributed snow. After sunset, another 0.2” We falls, for 2-3” of powder. Wind: SW 10-25 early, W 15 in the afternoon, and light westerly overnight.

Thursday looks clear all day with snow after 11pm. The freezing level in the morning will be 1500′ to 2000′. It rises to 7000′ in the afternoon with slope-side temps at 33F or so. Overnight, the snow level starts at 500′ and drops to 4000′. It’s possible the precip could start off wet and sloppy, but it will be more dry by Friday morning. Expect 0.3” WE overnight, for 2-3” of heavy new snow. Wind: light westerly early, S 15-30 in the afternoon, SW 15-30 overnight.

Friday sees continued snowfall that tapers off in the afternoon and ends in the evening under clear sky. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and the freezing level will drop near 0′ overnight. About 0.3” WE is forecast during the day, for 3-4” of powder. Just a trace falls in the evening. Wind: SW 15-20 early, W 30 mid-morning, W 25 in the afternoon, and light and variable overnight.

As of now, Saturday looks clear early and high overcast later. Sunday brings some very light precip with 850mb temps at +1F, right on the edge for snow or mixed precipitation. Hints of Pineapples are in the forecast for the middle of next week. Fingers crossed for pillows instead. Enjoy your day on the hill!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Cycling

Volunteers needed! Columbia Area Mountain Bike Advocate (CAMBA) is doing small projects at the Syncline this winter: treadwork and trail maintenance. Show that we care and want to protect it! Due to COVID restrictions, work party numbers are limited, so if you can help, contact Ann 509-637-three seven one three. Hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and sightseers all welcome! Do be aware of the possibility of freeze-thaw (muddy) conditions, especially on trails that are not under a tree canopy. Do not ride if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing when you want to ride. The soil structure will be liquefied, and you will do permanent damage to trails. Consider riding gravel roads instead.
