Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

A 48 hour period of too-warm-for-snow weather gives way to snow on Sunday and Monday followed by alternating periods of warm/wet and cold/snowy weather next week. Generally speaking, upper flow will be SW, which leads to this sort of snow-rain pattern.

For Friday, expect a snow-rain mix on the mountain early switching to clear sky and/or scattered orographic snow flurries through Saturday morning. The snow level will be 5500′ early, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. Just a trace of snow will fall in the 24 hour period. Wind will be WSW 25-30 during the day and SW 30-40 overnight.

Saturday starts with snow but switches quickly to rain. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 6500′ by 7am, and then will bounce around between 5500′ and 7000′ before dropping to 5000′ after midnight. About 0.4” water value (WV) falls during the day Saturday, for an inch or two of snow followed by rain. Another 0.7” WV falls as rain overnight, with a dusting of snow at the back end of that system. Wind will be SW 30-40 early, WSW 30-35 mid-morning, SW 10-15 in the afternoon, SW 20-30 in the evening, and WSW 30-40 overnight.

Sunday brings snow. The snow level will be 5000′ early and 3000′ later. A brief burst of snow in the morning brings 0.3” WV for 2-3” of wet snow. Clear sky sticks around through the afternoon with clouds below 6000′. Another round of snow overnight drops 0.3” WV, for 3” of regular old Cascade powder. Wind will be WSW 30-40 early, W 40-45 mid-morning, W 35 in the afternoon, and SW 25-35 overnight. Heavy snow is in the forecast for Monday daytime. After that, the timing of systems becomes less clear; it’s a progressive and active pattern, and that’s just the way it is!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light easterlies on Friday morning give way to westerlies this afternoon: gusty 7-10 in the west and gusty 18-22 east of The Dalles. Saturday starts with E 20-25 form Rooster to Stevenson. The wind slowly fades, becoming calm by early afternoon. It then picks up to E 20-25 overnight. Sunday starts with W 25-30 in the far, far west near Rooster Rock with E 10-15 near Stevenson. Light westerlies arrive for the west in the afternoon with gusty 25-29 east of The Dalles.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s snowy or muddy on all the trails now. Please leave them alone so you don’t do damage. The only exception may be the lower parts of Syncline, but they are probably muddy enough that you will do damage too. Think about gravel or road biking today, as temps should make it into the upper 40’s with just-sprinkles falling from the sky.
