Gorge Wind Forecast
We’ve got a couple solid days of west wind on tap as strong offshore high pressure combines with heat in the desert and a lack of disturbances passing through. Temps start to rise and the wind speeds drop starting Sunday, but models are signaling at least a little bit of wind through much of the heat wave. That’s a pleasant surprise! Now, let’s talk about me. I’m going on a meditation retreat starting today. I’ll try and get a forecast out Saturday, but I’m not sure I’ll have enough cell signal to tether, and honestly retreats are about getting away from work, not continuing it! Let me give you a spoiler: it looks very windy on Saturday, and you may just be able to look out the window! After that: stay between Stevenson and Hood River and plan for late afternoon thermals for the best results during the heat wave.
Okay, let’s start with Friday. Clouds pushed well past Hood River this morning and messed up my (and Dave’s) dawn patrol plans. Give it a few hours, and the gradients (0.12/0.10) will do their work. Between Viento and Mosier, you’ll find a quick build to 25-29 late morning with 27-31 late morning to early afternoon. Lyle, Rowena, Doug’s, Avery, and Rufus will all join the fun today with 27-31 (Rufus right off the bat and the Rowena stretch later). Models suggest 25-28 this afternoon at Arlington with 18-22 at Threemile. Stevenson: after the clouds burn off, it should build to 25-29. Models do hint at slightly less wind late in the day, perhaps a drop off to 24-27 from Viento to Rufus. River flow readings are 184-220kcfs, river temp is 67F, and high temp forecast is a truly pleasant 78F.
Strong offshore high pressure, a solid marine push, and desert heat combine for a repeat on Saturday. 24-27 starts the day from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 at Stevenson and areas east of Mosier. Midday: 26-29 from Viento to Mosier with 23-26 at Stevenson and 18-22 from Lyle to Rufus. Afternoon: 24-28 from Stevenson to Rufus with 22-25 at Arlington and 11-14 at Threemile. High temp: 83F. Nice!
Moving on to Sunday. Heat starts to build all across the PNW. This knocks the wind down, but it’s likely the wind will outperform the models. The models say 10-13. As of this morning, I say 13-16 (Viento to HR) to start with 16-19 from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon. Eastern Gorge: light starting Sunday and staying that way next week.
Despite the very hot weather forecast for next week, models hold on to onshore flow and hint at westerlies in the teens through at least Wednesday. You are probably wondering about the timing of the cooldown, right, and if we’ll get a big day? I am! It’s not clear yet… the very hot weather will stick around through at least next Thursday and probably Friday. So, enjoy the pleasant temps today and Saturday, and make the most of these strong westerlies!

Local-ish Events
Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! It’s a busy week for sailboat racing in Cascade Locks: the Optimist Nationals are happening. The SIC Gorge Paddle Challenge runs Friday through Sunday in Hood River.
Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.
Cycling
Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain is clear. Fifteen Mile has lots of trees down. Plains of Abraham is open and is rideable. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
