Gorge Wind Forecast
Not much is happening today, but we’ll have easterlies both days this weekend. Next chance for westerlies looks pretty marginal – Wednesday, and it’s just a maybe.
Friday starts with light westerlies and pressures of 30.19/30.16/30.13. That’s light westerly gradients, but not enough to get you on the water. What little wind we have this morning, 5-10mph out of the west, goes calm midday and switches to E 10mph near Cascade Locks and Viento this afternoon. Rooster remains light and variable. River flow readings are 68-98kcfs, river temp is 66F, and high temp forecast is 78F.
Saturday kicks off with easterlies at 20-25 near Cascade Locks and Viento with 25-30 near Rooster Rock. The wind levels out at 20-25 from Rooster to Viento early afternoon before fading late afternoon. By early evening, Rooster will be in the 15-20 range and Cascade Locks/Viento will be in the 10-15 range. Sunday starts with 15-20 from Rooster to Viento. After noon, the wind drops to 10-15. Evening may bring some very light west wind, but it could also be calm.
Looking longer range, there’s not much happening next week. We’ll have warm and sunny weather all across the PNW with not much pressure gradient. Models hint at westerlies in the teens on Wednesday, but that’s a very long way out to be making a forecast. Perhaps make plans for something other than wind sports!

Temps start in the low 50’s and rise near 80. Light easterlies or calm wind. No rainbows. Sunday will be exactly the same as Saturday!

Local-ish Events
Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is at 5pm this week (9/27).
Cycling
About 0.1” rain fell in the last 24 hours, and that’ll be enough to make a difference on trails exposed to open air. Under the trees, you’ll probably still find dusty conditions! All Hood River County trails are closed to motorized use until further notice. These trails are closed to all uses: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and any lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.
Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
