Mt. Hood Forecast

Yesterday’s forecast verified, and there’s a LOT of new snow on eh slopes this morning. It’s yet another powder day on Mt. Hood! Not the best for Nordic skiing, but not awful either, as the snowfall should taper off quickly once daylight hits. The effective snow level (based on 850mb temps) will be about 3500-4000′ this morning and 1500′-2000′ this afternoon and evening. About 0.3” to 0.4” water equivalent (WE) is forecast for Friday daytime. Call that 2-4” of relatively dense snow. Another 0.2” WE is forecast overnight, early, for 2” fluffier snow. Wind: WNW 35 early, W 25 this afternoon, W 20 in the evening, and WNW 20-25 overnight.

Saturday starts mostly cloudy, turns clear midday, and picks up high clouds and then light snow overnight. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning and will fall to 1500′ after midnight. About 0.1” WE is forecast for the daylight hours, for an inch of new. 0.2” WE is forecast overnight. That’s 2-3” of fluffy powder. Wind: WNW 20-25 early, NW 20-30 midday, W 25 in the afternoon, and W 35 after midnight.

Sunday sees heavy snowfall with warming temps and a transition to rain after midnight. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ early, 3500-4000′ in the afternoon, and 6500′ after midnight. About 1.2” WE is forecast during the day (full-on storm skiing!) for 9-13” of increasingly heavy snow. Another 0.2” WE is forecast overnight. That’s 1” snow, and 0.1” rain. Wind: very strong. W 35 in the morning, W 40 in the afternoon, and W 50 in the evening.

Very strong wind and heavy precip (first as rain, then as snow) continues on Monday as an atmospheric river takes aim at the Northwest. Expect icing delays Monday morning and possible lift closures due to the wind (NW 50 is often too much for the bulk of Mt. Hood chairlifts). We’re looking at colder weather and continued snowfall (general picture, not daily) for at least the first half of next week. La Nina verifies! Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light west gradients this morning (it’s Friday!) should be just enough to turn the wind slightly westerly this afternoon, perhaps 10-13 west of Bonneville and “light” everywhere else. River flow is 151kcfs. High temp today should be in the upper 30’s. River temp: 36. Saturday starts with light westerlies and picks up to gusty 16-19 form Stevenson to Rufus mid-morning before fading and turning gustier after noon. High temp: mid 40’s. Sunday starts with westerlies at 12-15 west of Viento and east of Celilo. Afternoon wind picks up to 20-23 in those regions but stays light westerly, or perhaps picks up to gusty 5-10, in the central Gorge. High temp: mid 40’s.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

As needed until next spring and summer.

Hood River Weather Forecast

A cloudy morning may see some sunbreaks midday and then sprinkles overnight. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and mid to upper 30’s later. Light west flow (not really enough to call it ‘wind’). 59% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks sprinkly during the day and rainy overnight. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 40’s later. Moderate westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks rainy. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Light westerlies. 84% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

We are in winter riding season, and the trails are apt to be fragile. If it was below freezing last night and is above freezing now, don’t ride. If it was below freezing last night and it is sunny now, don’t ride unless you are under a tree canopy for the entire ride. Freeze-thaw conditions, when ridden upon, result in permanent trail damage. Please consider doing something else, perhaps riding a gravel road in the trees or going to the mountain. Thank you!
