Mt. Hood Forecast

A spectacular day for groom is in the works on Mt. Hood. Get it now! Sunday’s a storm skiing day, and then we move into warmer, wetter, messier weather Monday. After that: colder with intermittent moderate snowfall. For today (Saturday): partly cloudy sky with flurries this morning gives way to sunshine mid-morning and high clouds in the afternoon. Snow returns tonight. The snow level will be about 2000′ in the morning, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ overnight. Just a trace is forecast during the day. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast tonight, for 3” new. Wind: NW 20-25 early, NW 25-30 midday, W 30 in the afternoon, and W 40 overnight.

Storm skiing is the call all day on Sunday, even when the snow tapers off in the evening. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and will rise to 6000′ (wah) overnight. About 1.0” WE is forecast during the day (maybe more, thanks to orographic assistance), for 10-12” of moderate-quality snow. Another 0.1” WE is forecast in the evening before the sky clears, or turns partly cloudy with flurries. Tack on 1” more snow. Wind: lots. W 40 in the morning, WNW 40-45 in the afternoon building to W 60 overnight.

Rising temps and super strong wind on Monday are going to make a giant mess of the lifts. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 5500′ mid-morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, 4000′ in the evening, and 1000′ overnight. Daytime precip will be ~1.3” WE mixed rain, snow, sleet and snain. Overnight, another 0.6” WE is predicted as snow: 5- 7”. That daytime mixed precip will ice up the lifts thanks to the wind: W 60 early, W 50 midday, W 55-60 in the evening, and NW 40-50 after midnight. It would be surprising to see lifts running in that much wind!

A trace of precip is in the forecast Tuesday with the snow level at 1000′ and strong NW wind. Clear sky is predicted with cool temps Wednesday. After that: back to moderate snowfall with low snow levels. Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies are in the forecast for most of next week. Most of those westerlies look mighty gusty, but there will still be opportunity for you to get on the (icy-cold) river if that’s your thing. For Saturday, expect westerlies at 8-15 this morning from Stevenson to Mosier with light and variable wind east of there. Afternoon westerlies, thanks to strong offshore high pressure at 1039mb, pick up to 21-24 from Stevenson to Rufus. River flow is 147kcfs today, river temp is 36, and high temp forecast is 44.

Tomorrow starts with gusty 15-18 in the eastern Gorge and west of Hood River. The central Gorge stays call. That setup holds all day. High temp: 47. Monday looks similar, expect the westerlies will be gusty 19-23 in the eastern and western Gorge with calm wind in the central Gorge. High temp: 51. Tuesday’s forecast could change, but it currently looks like westerlies at 26-30 as “Classic Gorge Setup” comes into play for a mid-winter play day.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

As needed until next spring and summer.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cycling

We are in winter riding season, and the trails are apt to be fragile. If it was below freezing last night and is above freezing now, don’t ride. If it was below freezing last night and it is sunny now, don’t ride unless you are under a tree canopy for the entire ride. Freeze-thaw conditions, when ridden upon, result in permanent trail damage. Please consider doing something else, perhaps riding a gravel road in the trees or going to the mountain. Thank you!
