Mt. Hood Forecast

This morning’s the calm before the next storm on Mt. Hood, and the Meadows grooming crew is reporting that the groom is fabulous. That’s a tip for you XC skiers who’ve been kept away by deep snow recently. It’s also a tip for anyone who likes carving the groom! Snow starts up midday and keeps going for the extended future.

We’re dealing with some inverted temps this morning on Mt. Hood. The effective snow level should be somewhere around 4000-5000′, but that inversion makes it look different. Expect today’s snowfall to be of the relatively dense type. During the day, we’ll see about 0.7” water equivalent (mostly in the afternoon as the snowfall ramps up) for 4-6” heavy new snow. Another 1.0” to 1.3” is forecast overnight. That’s 9-11” more. Wind: SW 10-15 early, SW 20-35 mid-morning, WSW 35-45 in the afternoon and overnight for a blizzardy round of night skiing with endless fresh tracks.

Moderate snowfall continues on Friday with a shot at some sunshine briefly in the morning. The snow level will be 2500′-3500′ in the morning and will eventually fall to 1500-2000′ overnight. About 0.4” WE is forecast for the day, for 3-4” new. another .3-.4” WE is forecast overnight, for another 3-4”. Wind: WSW 30-40 early, W 40 by daybreak, W 25 in the afternoon, and WNW 20-30 overnight.

More snow is in the forecast on Saturday, although the sun could pop out for a few hours midday. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning and afternoon and 2500′ overnight. 0.3” WE is forecast during the day, for 3-4” light, fluffy snow. Another 0.2” WE is predicted overnight for a couple more inches of powder. Wind: WNW 20-30 in the morning, WNW or W 25-30 in the afternoon, and W 35 overnight. The forecast for Sunday is increasingly stormy, windy weather with heavy, and increasingly dense snowfall. An atmospheric river with massive snowfall is forecast for Monday, assuming the temps can hold as currently predicted. Stay tuned. Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

We are in winter riding season, and the trails are apt to be fragile. If it was below freezing last night and is above freezing now, don’t ride. If it was below freezing last night and it is sunny now, don’t ride unless you are under a tree canopy for the entire ride. Freeze-thaw conditions, when ridden upon, result in permanent trail damage. Please consider doing something else, perhaps riding a gravel road in the trees or going to the mountain. Thank you!
