Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Friday morning is starting out rainy on Mt. Hood, and I’d bet there’s some icing happening on the lifts too. Just a guess! Temps will fall during the day, starting off a 36 hour period of heavy snowfall and storm skiing. By Saturday evening, the sky should clear. We”ll then be on to dry, sunny weather on the mountain for four or five days, at least.

Friday morning’s rain should turn to snow by midday. Snow continues to fall overnight. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 5500′ mid-morning, 3000′ in the evening, and 1500′ overnight. About 1.1” water value (WV) will fall by 4pm, probably half as rain and half as snow, giving the mountain 4-6” of new. Another 0.8” WV falls overnight, for 7-9” of average density snow. Wind will be WNW 45 early, W 35-40 in the afternoon, W 50 (limited lifts?) in the evening, and WNW 50 after midnight.

Very strong wind and heavy snowfall Saturday morning give way to flurries under partly cloudy sky in the evening. The snow level will be 1500′ early, 1000′ in the afternoon, and 500′ overnight. About 1.3” WV falls during the day, for 13-16” of dry powder. Just a trace falls in the evening before the stars come out. Wind will be WNW 50 (disruptive) early, and will slowly fall to NW 25 in the afternoon before swinging to NE 20 overnight.

Sunday looks clear and dry. The free air freezing level will be 500′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 6500′ after midnight. Wind: NE 20 early, N 10-15 from early afternoon on. Monday looks clear and dry and warm. The free air freezing level will be 6500′ all day, rising to 9500′ ‘overnight. Wind: N 10-15. Ditto or similar through Wednesday or Thursday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Offshore high pressure keeps the westerlies flowing for a couple more days. Add in a cold front on Saturday morning for a stronger round of wind. For Friday, expect gusty 20-30 in the rain from Stevenson to Viento. The Central Gorge will be gusty 13-16, and the eastern Gorge will have gusty 18-22. River flow is 202kcfs and temp is 39 degrees. Saturday’s windsports will require a bit of driving. The day starts with gusty 23-26 in the rainy west and gusty 23-26 in the sunny east. You’ll find 30-40 from Moiser to Arlington between 7am and 1pm with 28-32 from The Dalles to Arlington after 1pm. Sunday looks like W 7-10 early and light and variable wind later with a high temp near 50 under sunny sky.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s possible Syncline recovered enough in the wind yesterday to make it worthy today. If you try it and it’s muddy, turn around. Looking at the forecast, there’s too much rain for mountain biking Saturday. Temps drop below freezing Sunday morning, setting up freeze-thaw conditions that will result in permanent trail damage if you ride. Keep an eye on next week, when temps will be warmer and the weather will be dry and sunny. There may be some good riding then!
