Tuesday. Snow for the mountain, snow for the valleys.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today, Tuesday, will be a stunningly gorgeous day on the mountain with blue sky and light wind. Expect groom to rival groom anywhere in the world. Cold, dry, light, soft packed powder. Yay! The free air freezing level will be less than 1000′ all day, dropping right down to sea level tonight. Wind will be light and variable in the morning, switching to E 10-15 in the afternoon as the cold pool deepens. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Wednesday starts off sunny and turns cloudy by mid-morning. Models are all over the place on the start of snow and snowfall amounts, so I’ll give a range. Let’s start with this tidbit: the snow level on Wednesday will be at sea level. Snow starts up sometime between noon and 3pm. We’ll see .3-.8” water value (WV) out of this system, for 3-8” of new snow. Sorry – no way to be more specific with so much variation in the models. The snow will end sometime between 1am Thursday and 10am Thursday, depending on your model of choice. Wind on Wednesday will be SE 15-25 in the morning, becoming light and variable in the evening and W 10 overnight.

In an interesting and beneficial change in the models, the storm is now forecast to track further south. That leaves the mountain on the north side of the system, where the air is cooler. Because of that, I’ve dropped the prior mention of mixed precipitation and left us with an all-snow forecast. You like that, don’t you?

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Thursday either starts off snowy or clear, turning clear by afternoon no matter which model you believe. The snow level will be less than 1000′ with temps at 5000′ in the teens. Wind on Thursday will be W 5-10 early, turning to NW 5-10 in the afternoon and N 10-15 after midnight.

Friday looks clear, cold and sunny on the hill. The free air freezing level will be at sea level, even for those of you in the metro areas. Temps on the hill will be in the low double digits. Wind will be N 10-15 early and N 20 in the afternoon. Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday looks sunny. We may see a few flurries on Sunday. The long range models show a very warm and wet system coming our way on Monday, but that’s way too far out to be forecasting. It’s just fun to mention it now and see if it actually comes to pass!

Enjoy the sunshine on the hill today!

Random Morning Thoughts

I had a funny conversation yesterday when I was trying to reschedule an interview in Portland from snowy Wednesday to dry Tuesday. The interviewer said to me, “There’s only a 30% chance of snow…” I had to stop and take a deep breath to keep myself from launching into a diatribe about the NAM, the ECMWF and the outlying dry GFS model.

This interaction brought up a lot for me about power, expertise, humility, and the need for me to protect myself by avoiding what could prove to be a nightmarish afternoon commute in Portland on Wednesday.

This struggle between autonomy and hierarchy arises for many of us, I think. We tend to set aside our own needs when we’re confronted with someone in a position of power asking us to go against our values, needs, or desires. We worry that if we stand up for ourselves, there will be some negative consequence.

Sometimes this is true, but sometimes it’s just a story we’ve created. So next time you’re in a position where your needs conflict with the desires of someone who has power over you, stop for a moment. See what you’re really worried about. Check if that worry is realistic, and move on from that place of deeper knowledge. You’re awesome, and so are your needs. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

There’s a full-on Nothing event happening out there this morning. No sign of the clear sky that’s up there on the ski slopes. The nothing is probably going to stick around all day unless we get lucky. Then we’ll see some blue sky and sunbreaks. Temps will hover right around freezing all day today. No precip. No rainbows. Light east wind.

Wednesday’s forecast still contains a lot of variation from model to model. We will get snow. The question is just how much and for how long. In a happy twist, the storm system is now predicted to stay far enough to the south to give us all snow, all the time, rather than freezing rain. Yay! Temps on Wednesday look to stay in the low to mid 20’s all day. We’ll see the snow start up between noon and 3pm, ending sometime between 1am Thursday and 10am Thursday, depending on which model you believe. Areas from Multnomah Falls all the way to Arlington will see 3-8” of snow from this system. The NAM model shows double this at Cascade Locks, but the GFS does not. East wind. No rainbows.

Thursday either starts out with the Nothing or with continued snowfall, depending on the model. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and the upper 20’s in the afternoon. No additional snowfall on top of the numbers mentioned above. East wind. No rainbows.

Friday through Sunday currently looks dry, with just a chance of a few flurries on Sunday. Models are predicting a very warm and wet system for Monday, but that could change. Worth noting is that the models show us above freezing when this system hits, which would be a nice break from the winter weather. If nothing changes in the long range forecast, the rivers are going to get very full on Monday.

Upcoming Events

It’s Tuesday. There’s free yoga at Flow at 4:30 and at HAVEN (Strong Women Yoga) in The Dalles at 5. There’s pickup touch rugby at 5 at the Hood River Marina Park. There’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu tonight from 5pm to 9pm. At 6:30 this evening, there’s meditation at Yoga Samadhi led by community members until the monks return. This remains, and most likely always will, my favorite activity of the week.

Coming up Thursday (rain, snow or shine) the HRVHS Nordic team has a fundraiser workout at HRVHS at 3:30. This should be super fun, and you should be there to make a donation. They are a club sport and receive zero funding from the school system.

Have an awesome day today!
