Good morning,

It’s another cloudy morning in the Gorge. We have light wind in the 10-15 range this morning, but we’ll see that pick up a bit into the 17-20 range this afternoon as a low pressure system moves east.

Coming up tomorrow, another low pressure system sets up, giving us 5-10mph wind in the morning. Models are all over the place with the wind speed in the afternoon. One shows 16-19 and the other shows 27-31. I think the second model is too optimistic, as we’ll have no high pressure support off the coast and yet another low pressure system moving in. So, let’s call it 17-20 tomorrow afternoon. Another strong low pressure system rotates off the coast on Friday for light wind in the Gorge.

Coming up this weekend, we’re going to see warm weather, hot actually (Cathy, I believe we have a date on Saturday) and east winds, sailable/kiteable on Saturday in the 20-24 range. Sunday is a little far to make the call, but looks light at this point. The north coast looks like 15-20 on Saturday with 6ft and light on Sunday with 8ft.

Wednesday is a busy night in the Gorge. Tonight’s the first Hood River Triathlon practice of the year. Meet at 6pm at the east end of the Event Site for a 500 yard swim, a 2 mile run and a 7 mile bike ride. Everyone is welcome, especially beginner triathletes. Also tonight is the Kayak Shed’s shop paddle, meeting at Husum at 5:30 (the WS’s around 4.5 ft), and the sailboat races.

Coming up this weekend, it’s the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic. If you want to watch, the best place to see suffering is at the top of Sevenmile Hill on Friday. If you want high-speed excitement, check out the Crit in downtown Hood River on Saturday.

In case you were wondering, the Hood River Weather website reports triple the normal amount of rain for May and an unofficial rainfall record for the month. Cross your fingers that June is better!

Have an awesome day today!

Good morning,

I’m afraid I don’t have much good news on the wind front today, unless you’re looking for not much wind so you can go fishing. I do have a good source who passed on some delicious smoked spring Chinook to me, so the fish are definitely biting. And supposedly fish like rain, and we’ve got that today. Speaking of rain (and high water in the Columbia), check out the photo of the 1948 flood at Historic Hood River. Today’s flow is 525,000cfs, and the river at Vancouver is at 17ft, 1 foot over flood stage.

We’ll see west winds in the 5-10 range today as low pressure hangs out off the coast. As the low moves east tomorrow, we’ll see a light start, but by afternoon, the wind will be in the 13-15 range from Stevenson to Mosier and the 22-25 range from Rowena out to Arlington.

Coming up Thursday, yet another low pressure system sets up off the coast, giving us partly cloudy skies, morning wind in the teens, building to the low twenties in the afternoon.

Since the wind isn’t being very cooperative, you might want to go road riding out in The Dalles today, or perhaps get a ton of work done, because there’s a lot going on tomorrow night. There’s the Kayak Shed’s shop paddle on the White Salmon, which is running about 4.5 feet, there’s the Hood River Yacht Club’s sailboat races – does the phrase Hood River yacht club sound funny to anyone else – and there’s the hood river triathlon, free and open to everyone, meeting at the Event Site at 6pm tomorrow.

Coming up Thursday, it’s the first day of the Mt. Hood Cycling classic, and as always on Thursday, it’s the Post and Pint ride out of dirty fingers.

Have an awesome day today!
