Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!

SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Active, unsettled weather continues for much of the next week. For much of the time, the Gorge serves up some sort of westerlies in response. Noteworthy days include Monday, when we’ll likely have easterlies, Tuesday, when there’s some potential for a stronger-wind day, and Wednesday, when it’ll probably rain. I’m helping with a retreat this weekend, but I’ll try and bust out at least a short forecast each day.

Friday morning started off with a darn fine sunrise and these pressures: 30.06/30.00/29.99. At dawn, westerlies were 18-21mph from Viento to the Hatch with less than 10mph everywhere else. Models suggest the wind will dip to 13-16mph not long after sunrise. Give it ’til late morning or early afternoon, and thermal gradients will nudge the wind back to 17-20mph between Stevenson and Mosier with 13-16mph between Lyle and Doug’s. The upward trend continues into the afternoon, when we’ll have 20-23mph from Stevenson to Avery and 13-16mph near Rufus. River flow over the last 24 hours was 94-172kcfs, river temp is 71.6F, and high temp forecast is 77F in Hood River.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

In the wee hours of Saturday, a weather system swings through. Good things are in store: lingering marine clouds on the west side, offshore high pressure, and a decent thermal gradient across the Cascades. Head east for the best results. Early wind will be 10mph or so west of The Dalles with more possible at Viento, where it might be drizzling. Between Avery and Arlington, Saturday starts with 23-26mph. Areas between Avery and Threemile build to 27-30mph in the afternoon. Between Stevenson and Doug’s, gusty 15-18mph is possible (maybe 20-23mph at the Hatch) as the clouds burn off. If the Rowena area ends up sunny, westerlies will spike to the mid or upper 20s there too. After 5pm, wind speeds plummet: under 10mph west of Lyle and into the low 20s to the east. High temps: 69 in Hood River and mid 70s in the desert.

A cool air mass will be in place on Sunday morning which sets us up for a light start: 12-15mph between Viento and the Hatch and less wind elsewhere. Models suggest westerlies recover midday and hang at 15-18mph between Stevenson and Mosier into the evening. Eastern Gorge: there may be a short period of 15-18mph as far east as Rufus, but it will die off in the afternoon. High temp: 74F.

High pressure builds inland on Monday and turns the wind offshore – we’ll have easterlies at 15-20mph at Iwash/Rooster Rock, Stevenson, Home Valley, and Viento. It’s possible that westerlies could return late in the day, but they probably won’t be strong enough to get you on the water. Speaking of strong… a stronger weather system approaches in the offshore waters on Tuesday. This fires off moderately strong (mid 20s) and gusty westerlies all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Rufus direction: probably not quite right, but hey, you’ll make it work, won’t you? Widespread rain or showers Wednesday and Thursday leave us windless, or mostly windless, for those days.
