Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! Apologies for not writing forecasts this past weekend. I was sure I’d be able to pull it off while assisting on a retreat, but I overestimated both my capacity and the available time. But I’m back with you until mid-November! In the forecast, we have a solid day of westerlies today followed by a lackluster week (in the wind department, anyway – other good things will happen) thanks to an offshore low, lots of rain, and cool temps.
It’s Tuesday, and we started with pressures of 29.86/29.73/29.68 for gradients of 0.13 and 0.05. Big picture: a weak low moves inland and into Idaho this afternoon, a strong low is offshore, and a front associated with this low will be approaching. This is likely to result in strong, gusty wind. Early wind was west 21mph at the Hatch and 31mph at Viento with 13-16mph at Stevenson and also east of Hood River to Arlington. Morning wind builds to 21-24mph from Stevenson to Mosier (more at Viento) with 26-29mph from Lyle to Arlington.
Afternoon holds in the western Gorge and rises to 27-31mph from Mosier to Threemile thanks to 1) thermal gradients and 2) that previously mentioned weak low moving inland into Idaho. Given all the moving pieces, the wind is likely to be quite gusty. River flow over the last 24 hours was 69-115kcfs, river temp is 70.7F, and high temp forecast is 75F for Hood River and low-mid 80s in the desert.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
A strong cold front with accompanying heavy rain is forecast on Wednesday. We’re likely to see 60-120 minutes of moderately strong wind just ahead of the incoming rain. Models, okay, not the models, gut instinct suggests very gusty 20-25mph. Position yourself ahead of the rain on the radar image. Best chances: morning at Viento and the Hatch. Afternoon near Rowena and Arlington and potentially Rufus, but it’s going to be very gusty at Rufus. High temps: 66 in Hood River and low-mid 70s in the desert.
Not much happens on Thursday as the entire region sits under cool, unstable conditions. Morning wind will be light, 10mph or less. Afternoon: you may find gusty 15-18mph between Lyle and Arlington after 5pm. You may also find pop-up thunderstorms. High temps: 62 in Hood River and 70 in the desert. Friday looks very similar to Thursday. Saturday will probably be light and variable. Uncertainty builds on Sunday, but chances of wind are better than on Saturday. Uncertainty skyrockets on Monday, so I’ll leave it there for now. Hope to see you on the Nch’i Wana soon … but not yet… still injured. Y’all get some for me today!

Good morning, neighbors! Gosh. I go away to help teach a weekend meditation retreat, and all hell breaks loose in the models. When I left, rain was a big “maybe”. Now: it’s gonna get WET! Steady rain starts mid-morning Wednesday for many of us and continues into the wee hours of Thursday. During the day Thursday, showers and thunderstorms are possible all day with a chance of small hail, which we definitely do not want because it fucks up pears and apples. Total rainfall through the end of the week: 0.5” to 0.75” for The Dalles and 1.5” to 2.0” for the Cascade Crest.
Tuesday, however, will not be wet. Nor will it bring thunderstorms. In Glenwood this morning, it was 42 degrees, the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Elsewhere – 50s and 60s. Afternoon will be pleasantly cool thanks to strong onshore flow coming out of an unseasonably strong offshore low. Highs: 75 and partly cloudy in Hood River, 81 in The Dalles, and 87 in Pasco. West wind rises to 20-25mph between Stevenson and Hood River with 25-35mph from Mosier to Threemile Canyon this afternoon.
On Wednesday, we’ll be the recipients of a gift: a cold front related to a strong (997mb) and unseasonably cool offshore low. High temps fall 10 degrees from Tuesday, and actual rain is forecast. Expect it to arrive in Cascade Locks by 11am and quickly move east. This is no mere summer sprinkle. Rain will be very heavy west of The Dalles between 11am and 11pm. Driving: unpleasant. Road surfaces: very slippery. Moderate rain extends to Rufus after 2pm with light drizzle all the way to the Tri-Cities (Hi, Chris!) in the evening. Highs: 60 in Stevenson, 66 in Hood River, 73 in The Dalles, and 78 in Pasco. Wind will be light westerly early with a short period of 15mph west wind in the afternoon between Avery and Rufus. Snow level: 7500′ rising to 8500′ and returning to 7500′ overnight.
Thursday starts showery west of The Dalles and rainy to the east with morning temps in the 45-55 degree range. Afternoon brings thunderstorm possibilities (and maybe small hail) all across the region. Highs will be near 60 in Stevenson, 62 in Hood River, 69 in The Dalles, and 72 near Pasco. Snow level: 7000′ or so. Wind: light and variable in the morning with 15-20mph between Lyle and Arlington in the afternoon.
Cool, showery weather continues on Friday. Lows: 45-55. Highs: 67-73. Wind: 15mph. Dry weather is likely on Saturday with highs in the 69-76 degree range. Sunday: similar. Some members of the ensembles along with the deterministic GFS give us the potential for more rain late Sunday into Monday. We’ll watch this closely!
A couple notes – Wednesday’s rain potential will be helpful for the fire crews and for fire danger, but it’s unlikely to put an end to fire season. Continue taking precautions! Wednesday’s rain will have a huge impact on your garden – go ahead and harvest any tomatoes that are blushing. Pick all the ripe peppers too. If you can’t eat them all, the local food banks will be happy to distribute them to hungry folks. Mycelium will also like this rain – mushroom season is about to kick in full force!
