Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′

Good morning,

Well first off, Jeff Blackman needs 8 volunteers Friday morning to help him winch big logs off Seven Streams trail. This is short notice, but if you can help, reply on the HRATS FB page. Next, the Waterfront Park weeding party is Sunday. Sunday, not Saturday. Someday I’ll learn to read three times before hitting “send”.

Last, the majority of the workers on Saturday’s HRATS trail work party (meeting at 10 Speed at 8:30), will be working on the Whoopdee trail. If we can get this section in, Steve will be able to get his machine in to cut in the rest of the loop. We need lots of volunteers. Expect a strenuous 15 minute hike in. Bring McLeods and grub hoes (we’ll have tools too), as you’ll be benching in about 200 yards of sidehill. Why the Whoop? Because we want a new trail! Because we want any trail! Because Steve’s been working nearly alone for a long, long time to make this happen. Show up and let’s get ‘er done! The high on Saturday should be near 70 degrees!

In events news, Columbia Center for the Arts hosts another stellar event: Andrew Shurka’s Alaska-Yukon adventure slideshow. You don’t want to miss this one, and it’s probably going to sell out. 7pm on Saturday, $10. We’re giving away a set of tickets tomorrow. Still thinking of the contest rules… Other events: Tonight is the Reel Paddling film festival in Portland. Tomorrow night, Team Tarkio presents a slideshow on kayaking in Bhutan. Pint Shack. 7pm.

On to the snow forecast: Snow level rises from 6500′ to 11,000-12,000′ today. Sprinkles this morning, downpour this afternoon, with 1” of rain on Mt. Hood by tomorrow morning. SW wind at 15-25 early, rising to 25-35 this afternoon.

Friday morning on Mt. Hood brings sprinkles, with clearing in the afternoon. The freezing level will be 8000′ early, rising to 9000’. Total rain: .1-.3”. Wind will be SW 30-35 all day.

Saturday and Sunday on Mt. Hood look clear and warm, with the freezing level at 11,000′ and SW wind at 10-20 both days. We’ll see high clouds move in Sunday afternoon.

In the wind forecast, easterlies at 15-18 today. Westerlies tomorrow afternoon at 13-15 near Hood River. No wind Saturday. Not much wind Sunday. Monday still looks good. However, instead of a static weather setup, there’s now a weak system in the picture, which may make the wind gusty and inconsistent. We’ll still see afternoon westerlies in the 26-30 range.

Have a great day today!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′

Wednesday
Thursday
Friday

Good morning,

First off, some mountain biking news. An all-girl work party led by Erin B. yesterday cleared all the debris off Seven Streams trail from the trailhead to the bottom of Cardiac Hill. Paul J and Sam C are headed in today to buck the remaining 27 downed trees. Many thanks to Hood River County for paying for those two guys to come in and clear our trail so we have it for a few more months before the logging starts.

That brings me to the main point: there’s a Post Canyon work party on Saturday, and we need you big strong men (and women) to help roll the big bucked logs off the trail. There’s also a work party on Steve D’s eastside trail (name not to be mentioned, but you know what I’m talking about). Meet at 10 Speed on 13th and State at 8:30am.

Also in trail news, Coyote (at Syncline) is now closed. USFS officers have been out handing out $50 tickets to violators, so do not ride Coyote.

And also on Saturday, there’s a weeding party at Hood River’s Waterfront Park.

Huh? What? You want a weather forecast? Oh fine…

Today on Mt. Hood: snow showers in the morning with the snow level around 3000′. Decreasing snow after 11am, becoming clear by afternoon. SW wind at 25-30, falling to 15-20 by noon. No significant accumulation.

Tomorrow looks warm enough to break out the pineapples and grass skirts. The freezing level, at 4500′ early, rises to 9000′ by 2pm and 11,000′ by 5pm. It’ll rain. Not buckets of rain, but .5-1.0” water value between 2pm Thursday and 2am Friday. Wind will be SW 10-15 early, 20-25 midday and 30-40 in the afternoon.

Friday starts off clear, with on-and-off rain showers during the day. The freezing level will be at 10,000′ all day. Wind will be SW 35-40 in the morning, dropping a little bit in the afternoon. Total precip will be .1-.3” of rain.

Saturday looks clear, or possibly high overcast. The freezing level will be 11,000′ or so and the wind will be SW 15-20. Sunday looks similar.

In Gorge wind news, we’ll see west wind at 10-14 this afternoon near Hood River. Tomorrow we’ll see east wind as an upper level low rotates off the coast. On Friday afternoon, westerlies pick up to 10-15. No wind on Saturday or Sunday, but Monday, if nothing changes, looks like a classic Gorge day with 30+ from Hood River to Maryhill.

Have a great day today!
