12/13 Get it while the gettin’s good!

white
Super El Nino is having quite an impact on the Pacific Northwest snowpack, burying the Cascades in a deep blanket of white down to low elevations. Meadows and T-Line received 17” of snow in the last 24 hours. It would have been more but for a period of warming last night that briefly switched the precip type from snow to something else. That said, today should be a pretty amazing day on the slopes! Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Expect light snowfall this morning, a break in the precip during the early afternoon hours, and then a return to heavier orographic snowfall tonight. The snow level will be 1500′ this morning, 1000′ this afternoon, and 500′ by tomorrow morning. We’ll see .2-.3” water value (WV) this morning, for 2-3” of additional snow. This evening’s snowfall will be wind/terrain driven, which makes for difficult forecasting. The GFS suggests .8” WV. I’m going to cut that in half, and call for 3-4” of snow tonight with heavy wind loading. Wind today will be W 35 early, WNW 35 in the afternoon, and WNW 45 late tonight.

Tomorrow starts off with a few lingering flurries and clears up mid-morning (or earlier) for a bluebird day. The free air freezing level will be 500-1000′, dropping to the surface after midnight. Wind tomorrow will be WNW 45 during the day, slowly turning to NW 30 in the afternoon and N 20+ overnight.

Tuesday looks clear in the morning and cloudy by late afternoon. The free air freezing level will be at the surface early, rising to 1500′ in the afternoon and falling back to the surface (at least in the Gorge) after midnight. Wind Tuesday will be NW 20 for much of the day.

As of right now, it looks like a series of warm/wet systems will impact the Cascades starting on Wednesday afternoon. It’s likely the Wednesday system will start as snow, and then switch to rain, followed by rain through Friday. However, a shift in the storm track could change that forecast. So… we’ll just have to wait and see, won’t we?

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light westerlies are starting the day today. Expect them to pick up to gusty W 20-23 east of Mosier from the late morning to early afternoon period. Tomorrow looks like gusty W 22-25 for much of the day east of Mosier. Tuesday starts off light and variable and picks up to W 10-13.

Random Morning Thoughts

FOMO is an insidious disease. People suffering from it can’t be happy – they’re constantly worried they’re not making the most out of each moment. FOMO, of course, is “fear of missing out”. You might find yourself suffering from it right now, as you realize that Mt. Hood received 17” of snow in the last 24 hours. Perhaps you already made plans today and can’t break them, or perhaps you didn’t buy a pass this year.

FOMO says, “I’m not getting as much pleasure out of this moment as I could be.” FOMO is frustration. FOMO is anger. FOMO is irritation. These emotions are a reaction to our sadness at not being able to do what we really want. Until we look at that sadness, let it pass, and move on, we’ll suffer from FOMO.

So, the next time you’re locked in FOMO’s grasp, take a moment to be sad that you’re not where you really want to be. When that sadness passes, see if you can find something, anything about your current situation that’s joyful. Even something little. Because little things are a step on the path to acceptance, peace and happiness. May you be free of FOMO today. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I wandered outside to check the weather a minute ago, and it was cold and damp and cloudy. You can expect clouds this morning and partly cloudy sky this afternoon with a few sprinkles early and heavier showers after 4pm. If you live above 1000′, you’re likely going to get several inches of snow tonight. Temps today will be in the low 40’s all day. Light wind early, moderate later, 46% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow may start off with a few sprinkles, but will likely end up partly cloudy. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. 11% chance of rainbows. Tuesday is a tricky call. Given the saturated ground, it’s likely we’ll see Nothing all day long. It’s also likely that the roads will freeze before the Nothing arrives, leaving us with very icy roads on Monday night and Tuesday morning. Tuesday temps will be in the low 30’s early and low 40’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. No rainbows.

Heavy precipitation returns Wednesday afternoon through Friday. It’s really unclear how much cold air will make it into the Gorge with this one, so it’s hard to say at this point if we’re looking at a snowy/icy mess or just a lot of rain. Stay tuned for more details as we get closer.

Road and Mountain Biking

Once again, you’ll find fun on the gravel roads. However, it sounds like there’s some snow, or at least slush, on the ground above 1000′, so keep that in mind if you’re riding. You’re probably going to be warmer and happier on the spin bike in the gym today, I’m sad to say.

Upcoming Events

It’s Sunday. There’s 9am power vinyasa flow at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon, there’s 4pm YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and there’s a 6pm candlelight restorative yoga class at the new Pure Yoga in Hood River. That’s located in the old Root Down Yoga space in the Mall 202. Also today: meditation at 11am at Flow Yoga, pickup touch rugby at 3pm at the Mosier School and ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30pm.

Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike repair party from 10am to 3pm today at their storage shed behind Cascade Eye Center in Hood River. You can stop by any time and give a hand – you don’t need technical skills. If you can wash a bike, you’re welcome. If you can change a flat tire, you’re welcome. If you have technical bike repair skills, you are also welcome. There will be snacks and hot cocoa and a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation.

Have an awesome day today!
