Saturday. More Super El Nino powder for ya!

DSC_5992-Edit
As if the two feet of snow we’ve had in the last 72 hours wasn’t enough, we have a ton more headed our way. NWS has issued the first winter storm warming since February of 2014. I have to concur with that assessment. We’re also both on the same page that there’s a chance of a little mixed precip this evening, but even if that does happen, we’ll still get a ton of snow in the next 48 hours. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Expect snow flurries this morning with steadier snow starting around 10am and really heavy precip hitting after 4pm. The snow level today will be 2000′ for much of the day, rising to 5000′-5500′ around 4pm and dropping back to 3500′ by 10pm and 1500′ by Sunday morning. We’ll see .8” water value (WV) between this morning and 4pm, for 6-8” of new snow. When the next round hits around 4pm, we may see some mixed precip, and we may not. Either way, there’s 1.5” WV headed our way, and we should get a minimum of 8-10” from that (I’m being really conservative here – a lot more snow than 8” wouldn’t surprise me one bit). Wind today will be W 15 early, building to SW 40 in the afternoon and swinging to W 40 overnight.

Tomorrow starts off with steady light snowfall, followed by more showery snowfall in the evening. The snow level will be 1500′ early, falling to 1000′ in the afternoon. We’ll see .4” WV between 4am and 4pm, for 4-5” of dry, light powder. Then we’ll see another .3” in the evening, for another 3” of fresh. Wind tomorrow will be conducive to free powder refills and slow high-speed quads: W 30 early, W 40 midday, and NW 35 in the afternoon and evening.

Monday may start out with a few lingering flurries, but should be sunny by midday. The snow level will be 500′ in the morning and will drop to the surface by the evening. Wind will be NW 25 early, becoming N 20 by midday. Tuesday looks sunny. Another system moves in Wednesday. This one could stay snow, but it’s looking like a chance of Pineapples for Thursday/Friday. But that’s a long ways out, and things might change between now and then!

Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s zero cross-Cascade gradient this morning, and there won’t be much more going on this afternoon. You can expect easterlies at 13-16 at the usual east wind spots late this afternoon. Tomorrow starts with west wind at 5-10 and picks up to W 20-23 from Mosier to Arlington in the afternoon with W 11-14 in the western Gorge. Monday starts out light and variable and picks up to W 10-13 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m thinking this morning about our amazing minds. We wander through the world assuming we are acting out of free will. On some level we are, but on another level, we are acting based on our mind’s preconceived notions of how the world works. Our past experience is hard-wired into our neural networks, and so we view the world from a certain viewpoint.

If bad things happened in the past, we expect more bad things to happen. If good things happened, we expect that to continue. If people treated us in a certain way when we were little humans and our neurons were forming new connections at an incredible rate, we expect that treatment to continue. All of these expectations occur on an unconscious level; this is part of why people in the same situation experience the situation in vastly different ways.

How do we overcome our unconscious biases? I have to agree with Freud on this one: we make them conscious. Once we shine the awareness spotlight on our mental processes, we can see them happening in real-time. We may not be able to stop them right away, but we can catch ourselves. Over time, we’ll have more choice and control over our reactions.

If you have a little spare time today, look into your past and see if you can guess what expectations you formed about the world. See if you can see those expectations playing out today in your interpretations of everyday life. You might be surprised. You might be stunned. You might feel the vast sense of relief that comes with understanding and insight. Your mind is awesome and so are you. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a sprinkly morning with a lot of clouds, and heavier rain will arrive by 10am, not stopping until sometime tomorrow. Lucky upper valley folks will see some mixed precip this morning. Temps today will be in the upper 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind, 31% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow starts off showery, and stays showery until the afternoon with less frequent showers after 4pm. It’s likely that elevations above 500′ will see mixed precipitation tomorrow, and perhaps even a couple inches of snow accumulation over 1000′. Temsp will be in the upper 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. Moderate westerlies, 99% chance of rainbows.

Monday starts off with a few snow flurries and transitions to partly cloudy sky by midday. Watch out for icy roads Monday morning, especially in the upper valleys. Temps will be in the low to mid 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Tuesday looks sunny. Looking ahead to the long range models, it looks like we may have a Situation developing for Wednesday night and Thursday. Sub-freezing air pools in the Gorge and the Pineapple Express rides right over top of that. You know what that means: freezing rain, sleet and snow. Stay tuned for (hopefully) changes…

One last thing: We are now at 14.09” for the water year. Average precipitation total for the water year on this date is 9.37”. That’s a lot of water!

Road and Mountain Biking

Gravel, anyone? I ran into a good portion of Hood River’s serious mountain bikers yesterday on the spin bikes at the Power Station Gym. Did you know the Power Station has free coffee for members? Yay.

Upcoming Events

There’s a trail run this morning at 8am in Post Canyon. There’s a tree planting party at Nichols Boat Basin today at 10am. There are three free yoga classes tomorrow, including a new one. There’s 9am power vinyasa flow at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon, there’s 4pm YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and there’s a 6pm candlelight restorative yoga class at the new Pure Yoga in Hood River. That’s located in the old Root Down Yoga space in the Mall 202. Also tomorrow: pickup touch rugby at 3pm at the Mosier School and ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30pm.

Coming up Sunday for you bike riders, it’s your chance to give back. Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike repair party from 10am to 3pm. You can stop by any time and give a hand – you don’t need technical skills. If you can wash a bike, you’re welcome. If you can change a flat tire, you’re welcome. If you have technical bike repair skills, you are also welcome. There will be snacks and hot cocoa and a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation.

Have an awesome day today!
