Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s another fine and windy Gorge morning. One thing to note: according to WSDOT’s website, a wildfire has SR-14 closed between milepost 84 and 100, so you’ll need to find another way to get Out East. Today’s wind will push that wildfire farther east. We’ll start the day with 21-24 from Viento to the Wunderbar with 13-16 east of Hood River (maybe 20-23 at Mosier?) and 7-11 west of Viento. By late morning, we’ll have 24-28 from Stevenson to Mosier. The wind shifts a bit east in the afternoon with 25-29 from Mosier to Celilo (Avery is below the wildfire, FYI), 18-22 in the western Gorge, and 20-23 east of the Deschutes.

A trough moves inland Thursday filling the west half of the state with cool, grey, drizzly marine air. YAY! A shortwave in the afternoon may lower wind speeds relative to gradients (which will be HUGE!). We start Thursday with 20-23 east of Hood River and 13-16 in the west. In the afternoon, we’ll have 28-32 from Stevenson (hopefully, if the clouds burn off) to Rufus with 25-29 east of Rufus.

Looking at Friday, deep marine clouds start the day and possibly hang around Hood River all day. We’ll start with 5-10 from Stevenson to Mosier with 12-15 east of Mosier. Afternoon westerlies look like gusty 16-20 in the west and 23-26 east of Hood River. Long-range weekend models indicated 10-13 on Saturday with light east wind on Sunday. Just a reminder that I will be on vacation Saturday through the following Wednesday.

BONUS: Jones Wednesday: 13-16. Thursday: 5-8. Friday: 5-8. Sauvie’s Wednesday: 10-13. Thursday: 10-13. Friday: 7-11. Coast (north/central/south). Wednesday: X/X/5-10, NW swell 3′ @ 8. Thursday: X/X/20-25, W 5′ @ 12. Friday: X/5-10/25-30, W 5′ @ 11.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the fun things that can happen to us humans is that we get ‘triggered’ by something. In technical parlance, this means our fight-flight-freeze system gets triggered. We then do things that, in the moment, we perceive as protective. The problem is that we aren’t quite in our right minds.

When we calm down, we may find ourselves ashamed of what we’ve done. Maybe we drank, used drugs, lied, got violent, ran away, curled up in a ball on the floor, or did any number of things that left us asking, “Why the heck did I do that?” That’s the ideal outcome – many people just feel ashamed or regretful.

The key, when this happens, is to ask “Why?” and explore the reasons for our behavior. Bringing a sense of curiosity to the situation, perhaps a sense of amazement at and awe of our bad behavior can help us face our silliness. Exploring it will give us more power the next time we are ‘triggered’, and that can help us behave better. May you be calm and grounded. Have an awesome day.
