With Temiraโ€™s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

Thereโ€™s โ€œTemiraโ€™s Awesome Travel Advisory Serviceโ€ and โ€œValuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areasโ€ – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temiraโ€™s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ainโ€™t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. Thatโ€™s where you come in. SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Lots of west wind on tap this week. If you’re looking for a big day, clear Tuesday or Wednesday! Between now and then: easterlies today, westerlies Monday and Tuesday. Uncertainty increases for Thursday and Friday; as of now, we’re looking at light/variable wind both of those days, but models are far from certain on that.

Sunday started with pressures of 29.80/29.94/49.96 for offshore gradients of 0.14/0.02. Easterlies started the day at 36mph at Iwash/Rooster, 24mph at Stevenson, and 23mph at Viento. Viento quickly begins its slide to the < 15mph, where it will be by noon. Iwash drops pretty quickly and will be down to 20mph by noon. In that same time frame, Stevenson picks up to 25-30mph and then fades to 20-25mph. Stevenson finishes the day at 10-15mph, and Iwash finishes under 10mph. River flow over the last 24 hours was 179-247kcfs, river temp is 51.0F, and high temp forecast is 73F and mostly cloudy.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

Monday starts off calm. Easterlies make a brief appearance at Stevenson in the morning (10mph or so) before the wind turns westerly in the afternoon. 2Pm: 11-14mph from Stevenson to Hood River. Cool air associated with an offshore low pushes in to the metro area late afternoon (PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN!) while the desert heat rises to 80F. This combo sends the wind to 22-25mph (or maybe more if we’re lucky) from Stevenson all the way to Rufus. High temp: 78F with partly cloudy sky.

On Tuesday, cool, cloudy conditions persist on the west side while a one-two combo of heat and a low pressure system affect the desert. Early wind looks like 18-21mph from Viento to Arlington. Afternoon wind builds to the low-mid 20s west of Mosier and 29-33mph from Avery to Threemile. Hermiston wind will be 23-26mph. Models indicate the possibility of a late-day (Executive Session) surge at the Hatch. Caveat: models do indicate surface-based instability which could impact wind quality and strength. High temp: 66F in Hood river and 79F in the desert with partly cloudy sky.

On Wednesday, a heat low remains in the desert, and a cold low/trough approaches the BC coast. West of the Cascades, conditions remain cool and stable. A massive pressure gradient is forecast to develop across the Cascades. In addition, we’ll have a low-level jet at NW 45mph aloft. Add up all that tech talk, and you have one thing: strong to very strong west wind everywhere east of Hood River and potentially at the Hatch as well. High temp: 55F in Hood River and 61F in the desert. Model agreement declines on Thursday, but the general picture is โ€œnot much windโ€. For now, same goes for Friday. Beyond that… we’ll have to wait and see!

HYPERLOCAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE

THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! What a nice morning it is! Oh, wait, I say that nearly every day except when the Nothing has taken over! It’s definitely going to be a nice day to be outside. I’m setting up irrigation systems. What are you doing?!?!

Glenwood this morning

Know what folks in Glenwood are doing this morning? They’re bundling up. It’s 33F there, enough to frost the buns and merit an extra tablespoon of heavy cream in the morning cup of coffee. Centerville tied with Glenwood in the temp category, but they only drink oat milk thickened with guar gum there. Elsewhere… Parkdale is interesting this morning โ€“ 38F on Trout Creek Ridge Road and 50F up by London Drive.

Today’s Gorge weather forecast

We’ll all max out in the 70s today โ€“ low 70s to the west, SIX-SEVEN degrees in The Dalles, and 77F out near Hermiston, where the watermelons are itching to put their seeds in the dirt. Speaking of dirt, it’s a good day to start hardening off your starts โ€“ we’re expecting at least some high clouds all day long. Today’s wind starts at 35mph near Iwash (cock) Rock and 25mph near Stevenson and Viento. By afternoon, the pen*ses arrive at Iwash Rock for light east wind and naked sunbathing. Stevenson finishes the day at 10-15mph. Elsewhere, easterlies pick up to 10mph, especially near The Dalles.

Monday’s Gorge weather forecast

High clouds stick around all night. That sets us up for 40-50F degrees to start Monday. By afternoon, we’ll have partly cloudy sky and temps ranging from 78-81F in the lowlands. Off the coast, a low pressure system keeps funneling clouds our way. This allows desert heating to outpace metro area heat. In response, west wind builds to 20-30mph late in the day.

Tuesday’s Gorge weather forecast

On Tuesday โ€“ we’re expecting wind and drizzle for the west side. East side: partly cloudy and wiiiiiiiindy. Rain falls west of Cascade Locks by 8am and extends to Hood River, on-and-off, from 11am to 5pm. Temps start around 50F. They rise to the mid 60s (west), 70F (The Dalles), and 79F (Pasco). The 15 degree temp difference across the Cascades will result in strong west wind: 20-30mph west of The Dalles and 25-35mph to the east. West side: mostly cloudy early and partly cloudy later. East side: mostly clear.

Extended Gorge weather forecast

From Tuesday night into Wednesday, a low pressure system sends wraparound moisture into our entire region. It’s hard to say how much moisture we’ll get โ€“ our last wraparound system didn’t do shit โ€“ but at least some rain is possible all the way east into the desert. Once the rain clears the area mid-morning Wednesday, we’ll have blasting west wind. Highs range from 55-61 degrees. Despite cool air aloft, we should be protected from frost by 1) rain, 2) cloud cover, and 3) wind.

The weather settles down and warms as we move into Thursday and Friday. Beyond that… at least a few days of dry, 60-70 degree weather followed by high levels of uncertainty but no signs of cold, downpours, or anything else that would get my feelers up. Enjoy this beautiful spring day! Safe travels. -TATAS
