Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a nice start to Wednesday morning, with .12 between Portland and The Dalles and whitecaps on the water near Hood River. For the first half of the morning, we’ll see 18-22 between Viento and Mosier with 13-16 near Lyle. Other locations will be in the single digits. By late morning or early afternoon, the wind will pick up to 24-28 between Cascade Locks and Doug’s, with a good possibility of the Rufus area joining in this afternoon. The far eastern Gorge will stay in the single digits or low double digits. With nothing of note happening in the upper atmosphere today, the wind should be relatively steady and reliable, with just the possibility of an early afternoon lull as Portland heats up.

A transitory trough moves through tomorrow, bringing more marine clouds but also making the wind less consistent. We’ll start the day with 18-22 between Hood River and Mosier. As the day goes on, the wind will build to inconsistent 23-26 between Stevenson and The Dalles. Given the extent of the marine clouds on Thursday, it’s quite likely it will be a long, steady build before Stevenson and Cascade Locks climb into the 20’s.

Looking at Friday, models indicate a weak weather impulse will move through. Once again, that will bring some inconsistency to the wind. We’ll start the day with 17-20 near Hood River. The wind will build to rangy 24-28 between Stevenson and Rufus. You’ll probably find the steadiest, most reliable wind at Stevenson in the afternoon and Avery for much of the day.

The current weekend forecast shows strong high pressure offshore and lesser pressure inland. Although the models aren’t indicating a lot of wind, this is the kind of setup where reality tends to beat the models. We’ll probably have 20-23 on Saturday and 16-19 on Sunday. These are just guesses at this point, but of course you’re coming to the Gorge anyway to view the eclipse on Monday, right?

Random Morning Thoughts

I experienced a feeling of utter disbelief yesterday when I watched the news. I believe it’s important we get something straight. The events that happened in Charlottesville resulted in violence and death. But the main story is not about violence. The story is about racism, hatred, bigotry and anti-Semitism. Our president is attempting to change the narrative to one of violence, not one of bigotry.

Let me repeat: this story is not about who was at fault for the violence. One group of protesters was advocating hatred and white supremacy. The other group was taking a stand against hate speech and bigotry. White supremacy is wrong. Period. Bigotry is wrong. Period.

Violence is also wrong.

Both groups got violent. Only one group was pushing values that are against what is right, good, and American. As Americans, we need to stand up against hatred towards our fellow Americans. The second group of protesters was doing just that.

When you have conversations about Charlottesville, remember that there are two separate conversations happening: 1) Racism and anti-Semitism. 2) Violence. Don’t be fooled when the media (liberal or conservative or alt-anything) attempt to conflate the two. This is a tactic to confuse you. Be strong. Think for yourself. Do this on other topics too. Have an awesome day.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
