Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Dawn Patrol kicked off a bit perkier than expected. Go get it. Come back and read the forecast later! Okay, okay. You should read the forecast so you know when to plan a rest day. Tomorrow starts relatively light but builds into the strong zone for the evening. For Friday and Saturday, we have relatively strong eastern Gorge westerlies. Sunday: probably less. Quick note: the Arlington railroad crossing remains closed today. No access to the point.
Wednesday opened up with gradients of 30.20/30.11/30.08 for pressures of 0.09 and 0.03. Westerlies were 20ish mph from Viento to Swell with 15ish from Hood River to Mosier and less to the east. Clear sky in the metro area suggests the wind will drop to 12-15 late morning, so get your windsport on now. You could also wait until the evening. Desert heat eventually outpaces the metro area. This gives us 17-20 from Stevenson to Doug’s late afternoon into the evening. River flow over the last 24 hours was 178-260kcfs, river temp is 60.98F, and high temp forecast is 75F.
A slow, sunny, chilly start to Thursday gives way to a partly cloudy, windy afternoon. For the strongest wind, you’ll need to wait for an offshore trough to start pushing cooler air into the west side; that is expected to happen late afternoon or early evening. Hopefully the timing doesn’t shift later, as that’ll shift the wind into the night. Anyway… expect 11-14 or so from Stevenson to Hood River to start. Early in the afternoon, the wind starts to build. You’ll find 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier. The wind eventually rises to 25-28 from Stevenson to Rufus with 22-25 at Arlington. Expect it to be up-and-down with huge gusts. That’s perfect for SUP foil, but not necessarily awesome for other activities. Still, there should be 60=90 minutes of steady wind before things get wacky.
All that action signals incoming “weather” for the weekend. A cool trough settles in. This shifts the action eastward, mostly. We should have a strong 5am-9am dawn patrol to start Friday. I’m thinking 25-28 from Stevenson to Arlington to start, best from Swell to Mosier. The wind then drops below 15mph west of Lyle and holds at 24-27 to the east all day long. Sometime mid to late afternoon, the Stevenson to Mosier stretch rebounds to 17-20. Saturday: drizzle in the morning. 25-28 east of The Dalles most of the day. It’s worth noting that atmospheric instability will be present out in the desert, and this could affect wind quality. Sunday: light west wind early with low 20s possible in the afternoon.

There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. On June 25th, Brave Endeavors hosts a pride MTB ride at Post Canyon at 5:30pm. June 30th is Vortex #3, a paddling race.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon.

Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Eightmile, Knebal, Bottle Prairie, Surveyor’s, Dog River, Sueprconnector, and Cook Meadows are open. Fifteenmile is clear of snow but has not been cleared of downed trees. Lewis River is open. Lower Falls Creek is open, but the area above Horse Camp is not. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral.
