Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Guess who slept in today? Meeeeeeeee! That’s okay – the wind is sleeping in too, but it, like me, will show up at some point. Westerlies today (Monday) give way to light/variable wind on Tuesday (maybe I should take the day off!). On Wednesday and Thrusday, we’ll have light easterlies, maybe 15-20mph if we get lucky. Your (happy) Gorge wind forecast for Friday is moderately strong westerlies. Westerlies probably linger into Saturday, and then we’re likely to fall into an easterly pattern to start next week.
Monday morning started off with onshore (westerly) pressure gradients: 30.11/30.07/30.05. Gradients were running behind model predictions, but clouds in the metro area should help them catch up. By late morning, we’ll have 19-22mph from Viento (or Stevenson) to the Hatch with 13-16mph in Hood River. Models nudge westerlies to the 21-24mph range from Stevenson to Mosier this afternoon with 17-20mph from Lyle to Doug’s and 13-16mph at Avery. River flow over the last 24 hours was 61-103kcfs, river temp is 65.8F, and high temp forecast is 82 for Hood River.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

Tuesday looks like a day for waterskiing! We start out calm or nearly so. Easterlies rise to 10mph at Stevenson, Home Valley, and Viento for a couple hours midday. To the east and west: very light wind. After that amazing burst of mid-morning 10mph easterlies: light and variable for the rest of the day. High temps will be in the low 80s under sunny sky.
Wednesday brings slightly stronger east wind: 15-18mph at Stevenson, Home Valley, and Viento until late morning or early afternoon. Afternoon wind falls to 15mph or less at Stevenson and 10mph at the other usual east wind suspect spots. High temps: low 80s, again. For now, Thursday’s looking nearly identical to Wednesday.
A weather system approaches on Friday and shifts the wind to westerly. Models don’t agree on how strong the wind will be … yet… For now, let’s call it low to mid 20s and cross our fingers for more. Upper 20s is not out of the range of possibilities. Some sort of westerlies, likely at least 17-20mph, probably stick around for Saturday. After that: enough uncertainty that I’ll finish up for today. Hope to see you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

HYPERLOCAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE
THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! Warm, sunny weather continues through Thursday. Much cooler weather arrives in the Friday-Sunday time frame thanks to a trough and a back-door cold front. That baby could take 850mb temps (~5000′) down to 0C to 2C, cold enough for frost at many elevations. We could even see a hard freeze in for our friends at higher elevations. You are forewarned.
Glenwood is getting ready for that colder weather by having a frost this morning: it was 32 degrees there. Up in Parkdale, temps ranged from 37F to 51F to start the day. Location is everything! High temps today will be pushing the low 80s everywhere. Yesterday, Sunday, we set a record high temp in Hood River with a high of 87 degrees (actually 86.5, but in the Gorge, we round up at .5, and we also wear pink on Wednesdays). Today’s wind will be westerly at 20mph between Stevenson and Hood River in the morning and 20mph between Stevenson and The Dalles this afternoon. East of Avery, the wind will stay light all day.
Tuesday’s temps look nearly identical to Monday’s, but the wind will be different. Morning: 40-55 degrees. Afternoon: 80-85 degrees. Areas west of Cascade Locks might have some morning clouds, but they won’t last. Wind will be light and variable or calm all day with the exception of easterlies at 10mph near Stevenson, Home Valley, and Viento or a few hours midday.
Wednesday looks just like Tuesday with this difference: morning easterlies at 15-20mph west of Underwood and afternoon easterlies at 10-15mph in the same zone. From Hood River eastward, wind will be non-existent all day long. Or light. Whatever. There won’t be much. Thursday will be much like Wednesday.
Something different happens on Friday – a weather system approaches. Quite a bit of uncertainty is present in the high temps; as of this morning, the forecast for The Dalles is 65-79. That’s somewhere between gray sweatpants and hoodies and bikini weather. In the Friday-Saturday period, there’s a chance of a little drizzle (under 0.25” and potentially none at all) west of Hood River and a trace to the east.
It’s definitely going to be chilly for the weekend – highs will drop to 60 or maybe even less! Cool air aloft and a dry air mass thanks to a back door cold front sets us up for frost potential not-quite-to-river-level. Everyone above 1000′ should prepare for frost next Saturday and especially Sunday. That gives you plenty of time to either prepare or throw your hands up in the air and leave things to chance. Looking deeper into the future… winter is coming! Safe travels. -TATAS
