Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Fall is in full swing, and the wind will do its fall thing: it’ll swing back and forth between easterlies and westerlies this week. That’s your Gorge wind forecast in a nutshell! If you’re hoping for westerlies, Monday and Friday will be your best chances. Monday’s focus will be the Corridor (Viento to Hood River), and Friday’s wind should fill in all the way out to Arlington. Next Saturday may also bring westerlies, but much cooler temps will push the wind out to the desert (probably), and the strength looks marginal. Beyond that: uncertainty rears its head.
Sunday kicked off with pressures of 30.02/30.05/30.06 for light offshore gradients. We’ll see westerlies at 17-20mph at Viento and Stevenson and possibly Iwash/Rooster (50% chance) this morning for a couple hours. Get on it really early. After 11am, the wind will turn light westerly at Iwash and drop to 10mph at Stevenson and Viento. Afternoon wind eventually builds to 13-16mph out of the west between Stevenson and Viento with 11-14mph from the Hatch to Hood River. River flow over the last 24 hours was 57-81kcfs, river temp is 65.8F, and high temp forecast is 81F and sunny.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

Monday brings a decent setup for westerlies. Low clouds start the day in the metro area, and the desert starts sunny. We’ll have enough gradient for 17-20mph right off the bat from Viento to the Hatch. Gradient may not equate to wind early – this time of year the wind can take a couple hours to match the gradient. If the clouds persist longer than expected, we’ll have 20-23mph from Stevenson to Hood River all day long. If not, 17-20mph is the call. High temp: 82F and sunny.
Tuesday starts light westerly and turns calm or nearly calm. High temp: 81 degrees. East wind returns on Wednesday. We should see 25-30mph at Iwash and Stevenson with 20-25mph at Home Valley and Viento. High temp: 82 and sunny. Easterlies linger at 25mph Thursday morning but quickly fade and leave us with calm conditions. An approaching front on Friday brings our best chance for a bigger westerly day. Models are still uncertain about just how windy it will be. For now, pencil it in as 20+ mph. We’ll work out the deets as we get closer. Enjoy the sunny weather today. Hope to see you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

Good morning, neighbors! Nothing to see here! Looks like a great day for spending some time outside watching football! Warm, sunny weather continues through Thursday. Friday brings much cooler (and windier) weather with a chance for a few sprinkles but no significant rain.
Sunday started clear and dark (I woke up early) and 37 degrees in Glenwood. Long nights make for excellent cooling! When the sun crests the horizon, we’ll be on our way to another unseasonably warm day: 82 in Stevenson, 81 in Hood River, 85 in The Dalles, and 80 in Pasco. Today’s record high in Hood River is 86. We’re very unlikely to see that, but hey, it’s still quite warm! Today’s wind: 15-20mph out of the east near Iwash (it’s not a rooster) Rock, Viento, and Stevenson this morning. Calm midday. 10-15mph out of the west between Stevenson and Hood River late this afternoon into the evening.
Clear sky sticks around overnight. It would be cold, but temps at 850mb are 20C, very warm for this time of year. This translates to upper 30s in Glenwood for Monday morning and 45-55 for most of the rest of us. Inland high pressure relents a bit, and the heat low shifts east of the Cascades. In response, west wind returns: 20mph pretty much all day between Stevenson and Hood River with 20mph as far east as The Dalles in the afternoon. East of The Dalles: light wind all day.
Tuesday looks warm, sunny and not windy. Highs: 79-85.
Wednesday and Thursday bring warm, sunny “boring” weather: 80-85 degrees. East wind will be 25-30mph in the usual spots on Wednesday. Thursday starts with easterlies at 25mph in the usual spots (calm east of Hood River) and turns calm all through the Gorge in the afternoon.
Friday brings something to talk about, finally, but it’s not much: a cold front swings through. Rain amounts with this keep dropping – we’re now down to a trace, and that’s if we’re lucky. The most exciting thing about this system will be a drop of nearly 15 degrees in high temps – expect upper 60s Friday and Saturday. Also exciting for some: stronger westerlies that extend all the way from Stevenson out to Arlington’s well-groomed, equilateral, dry-grass triangle.
After Saturday, uncertainty increases. Some rain is possible (50% of the ensembles like this idea) for the middle of the following week. TBH, there are no clear signs of any concerning travel weather in the next couple of weeks. We’ll keep on keeping an eye on it in case something changes! Safe travels. -TATAS
