Wednesday. Nice weather. Nice dirt. Nice spring, eh?

DSC_0891-Edit-Edit
As you can see by the inclusion of the wind chart today, I’m slowly moving toward full-on summer forecasting. Yes, Jones, Sauvie’s and the coast will return as nearly-daily forecasts, but not yet. We can’t get all carried away with adding everything at once, now can we? Anyway, today looks like another windy day in the Gorge. 6am gradients were .05 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc). We’re going to see a weak weather system and weak low pressure system move across the Pacific Northwest today, and that’ll bump the wind up later in the day. High pressure building in behind that system will assist with the wind, but it’s probably not going to happen early enough to make for awesomeness. Just near-awesomeness. Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Expect morning westerlies at 10-13 from Hood River to Doug’s, with 7-10 further east. We’ll have gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier by noon, followed by 22-25 or a touch more from Stevenson to Maryhill this afternoon. Beaches east of Maryhill are probably going to stay in the teens today. One thing to keep in mind today is that this type of setup tends to not favor the Swell City stretch of the river. I dunno why, but it just doesn’t. So, you’ll probably get 90 minutes or so of good sailing at the Hatch before you need to look elsewhere for steadier conditions.

Thursday sees offshore high pressure combine with inland low pressure in the morning for a better early day setup. However, a frontal system approaching late in the day will probably mess up the after-work session. That said, you can expect 17-20 right off the bat from Viento to Mosier. The wind will build steadily into the early afternoon, hitting 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus by 5pm and filling in out to Arlington in the evening.

Friday sees a couple of weak weather systems moving through, but if you jump on the late morning wind, you’ll likely be happiest. As of Wednesday morning, it’s looking like Friday will start off with Dawn Patrol (46 degrees) at 22-25 with a midday session of 27-31 from Viento to Rufus.

Looking at Jones Beach, we’ll have nothing today and 20-23 on Thursday and Friday. Sauvie’s looks like 5-8 on Thursday and 10-13 on Friday. Out on the coast, there’s not much happening today. However, the next four days look good (north/central/south). Thursday: 10-15/15-20/30-35, NW 7′ @ 13 seconds. Friday: 20-25/20-25/30-35, NW 8 @ 13.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Okie dokie… I’m slowly easing out of the Mt. Hood snow forecast for the season. I’ll still put something out, at least until Meadows finishes up for the season and Timberline is spring skiing all the time. But… it puts me over the edge to have both a ski graphic and a wind graphic. So, for now, no more snow graphic, except maybe for the weekend. Gosh… I’m so wishy washy this morning! Anyway… snow forecast… It’ll be partly cloudy on Mt. Hood all day today. The free air freezing level will be 3500′ early and 5500′ later. Wind will be W 10 early and NW 10 in the afternoon.

Thursday looks sunny with the possibility of some clouds overnight. The free air freezing level will be 6000′ early and 7000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be NW 10 all day. Friday looks sunny in the morning, cloudy in the afternoon, with light flurries after 4pm. No accumulation will happen, other than maybe a trace or half an inch or so. Wind will be NW 20-25 all day. Looking at the weekend, we’re currently expecting warm, sunny weather on the hill.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m doing this group project in school, and it’s a very interesting experience. I’m one of those people who likes to get things done way in advance and then refine the project into something worthy of a spot on the wall in the Gugenheim. Yes, I have some perfectionistic tendencies, you read me right! Plus, I like beautiful things. My partners work in different ways than I do, which is a great learning experience for me; this allows me to look at the ways in which I react to this situation.

We all react to situations from multiple levels. We are complex beings, after all, with many life experiences and many expectations of the behavior of others. So, when we’re trying to understand a situation, it’s important to separate the layers and look at them individually. Even better is to resolve the layers we are capable of resolving.

We can do this by sorting out what’s going on and taking on situations piece by piece. For example, one of my pieces was worrying about telling my partners how our different styles were impacting me. Another piece was worrying about grades. Another piece was wondering if my reactions were overblown and judging myself. You get the picture, right – situations are complicated.

So when you encounter a highly emotional situation, it’s important to see if you can retain just a bit of your logical, dispassionate awareness. See if you can tease apart some of what’s going on and resolve even just a little bit of the distress. That’ll free up more capacity in your mind to understand other pieces of the stress. If you can resolve the piece that’s causing the most suffering (it may not be the obvious thing or the most important thing to an outsider’s view), you’ll be well on your way to resolving the entire problem, or at least to feeling better about a situation. You can do this, because you are awesome. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy out there this morning, and that’s probably the way it’ll stay all day, although there’s a chance this weak weather system will give us totally high overcast sky for a while. Whether it does or does not, you can expect temps in the upper 40’s early and the low 60’s this afternoon. Light wind early, moderate westerlies later. No rainbows. Damnit. No rainbows. I haven’t seen a rainbow in four days! Thursday looks sunny early and partly cloudy later. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong west wind. No rainbows. Friday looks partly cloudy for the most of the day, giving us a very, very good chance of an awesome sunrise. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows.
