Gorge Wind Forecast

Tuesday is starting off with moderate westerlies on the Columbia – no wind at Stevenson and 10-18 depending on where else you look. The early morning gradients, for what they’re worth, were .07 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc). Today’s weather setup looks calm this morning with a weak weather system approaching this afternoon. That’s definitely not an ideal setup, but we will see plenty of wind for you to get on the water today. Expect 13-16 through pretty much the whole Gorge for the morning session. The wind will then back off to 10-13 east of Maryhill and pick up to 22-25 from Stevenson to Maryhill. That said, it’s quite likely the wind will go kaput, or at least poop out a bit, from Swell to Mosier as this weather system approaches. Best bets for longest lasting, steadiest wind today will probably be Stevenson, the Rowena stretch, and apparently not-accessible Avery.

That weather system moves through on Wednesday morning and high pressure builds in during the afternoon. We’ll see light and variable wind on Wednesday morning. In the afternoon, after 1pm or so, we’ll see W 10-13, maybe a touch more, from Stevenson to Maryhill. Thursday sees strong high pressure build over the Pacific, setting us up for a solid day of west wind. We’ll see Dawn Patrol on Thursday morning at 17-21 from Viento to Mosier. The wind will pick up to 27-31 by late morning or early afternoon from Stevenson to Maryhill.

Speaking of Maryhill, I got a text that it was good yesterday, despite the river flow being an impressive 350kcfs. If you are going to kite or windsurf that stretch of water at this point, be prepared for strong current. River temp is hanging steady at 53 degrees.

Random Morning Thoughts

No time for random thoughts today. I have way to many random tasks to accomplish before a meeting at 3:25pm.

Road and Mountain Biking

The dirt was pretty much near-perfect in Post Canyon yesterday, and I’m sure you’ll find really nice dirt today too. In road biking land, tomorrow looks awesome, with light wind for much of the day just light westerlies in the afternoon. There’s no significant rain in our future, so get out and enjoy the perfect dirt while it’s… awesome!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include free Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1, by-donation yoga at Yoga Samadhi at 6, pickup basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, and community Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30. Tomorrow is officially Awesome Day in Portland, so we might as well make it Awesome Day all day here too, so do something awesome.

Coming up next Saturday, there’s the pond skim at Meadows, a youth fishing clinic at Mayer Park, a garden party at Pacific Hermitage, and the Fly Fishing Film Tour in The Dalles. On Sunday, it’s the Bear Springs Trap mountain bike race and a trail work party in Post Canyon.

Have an awesome day today!
