Wednesday. Nice dirt out there. Go get some for yourself.

Mt. Hood received a couple of inches of snow last night, and it looks like the mountain will get a few more inches today. It’s not enough to shred yet, but it’s a start! As a total aside, forecasting Mt. Hood weather is interesting – the view from my office is of Mt. Adams. It’s clear and sunny on that mountain this morning, but a look at the Meadows webcams reveals stromy, snowy weather on that volcano. What a difference 100 miles makes! Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Anyway, the snow level this morning is around 3000′ and shall remain there or a bit lower today. As this morning’s weather system moves through, the mountain will see another .2-.3” water value (WV) for 2-3” of new snow. By afternoon, however, the mountain will see a mixture of sunshine and flurries, transitioning to clear sky overnight. So, no more accumulation after noon. Wind today will be W 40 early, fading to W 20 in the afternoon and lessening overnight.

Tomorrow starts out clear or perhaps partly cloudy, with high clouds developing mid-morning and a few flurries or sprinkles late in the day. No accumulation. The snow level will be 2000′ early, holding during the day, and slowly climbing to 6000′ in the evening and 7000′ after midnight. Wind on Thursday will be W 5-10 early, SW 15 during the day, and W 25 in the afternoon and evening.

Things get interesting on Friday, as an atmospheric river lines up on WA and BC, leaving us on the edge of the pineapple zone. Friday will be cloudy with steady mist likely all day, but hey, mist is better than the torrential downpour that will hit Vancouver Island! At this point, it looks like the rainfall rate will pick up a bit overnight, for .3” WV that falls as… rain! The snow level Friday will be 7000′ early, 9000′ midday, and 7000′ late. It looks like the wind will be WSW 30-35 on Friday.

If that’s not interesting enough for you, get ready for Saturday: models say Mt. Hood will receive 2.5” water value. Models currently predict that the snow level will drop before the moisture is done, but I’m not buying it. For now, I think the mountain will see a LOT of rain. But hey, I’ve been wrong before!

It looks like the “interesting” weather will continue through Wednesday, with periods of very heavy rainfall interspersed with back-of-the-front snowfall. One thing I should say about this: models do struggle with this type of progressive setup – they tend to mis-time the arrival of systems, the change in 850mb (5000′) temps, and the amout of precip. So… long-range forecasting isn’t going to be very accurate right now. In other words, we get to wait and see!

Gorge Wind Forecast

This morning started out with solid gradients and enough wind for you to get on the water. At 6am, we had .10 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc). Models suggest the pressure gradient will back off mid-afternoon, so you’ll want to get on the water in the morning if you want the best chance of not-rerigging.

By mid-morning, we’ll have gusty 24-27 from Mosier east to Arlington with the strongest, most reliable wind likely from Mosier to Doug’s and way out east. In the western Gorge, cloud cover will impact the reliability and steadiness, but you can still expect periods of gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to Hood River. Maybe drive a little further east for better results? The wind, as I said, looks like it’ll back off into the 15-18 (or less) range everywhere from mid-afternoon on.

Tomorrow, Thursday, looks like light and variable wind all day long. Friday starts out light and variable and picks up to W 10-13 in the afternoon. Saturday and Sunday will have periods of stronger wind. Periods, not long stretches!

Random Morning Thoughts

I was talking the other day about the opportunities present in moments of crisis, moments that I like to call tipping points (that always brings Gladwell’s great book to mind for me). Anyway, I’ve been reflecting on something that happened between my therapist and I on Monday… I’m not one to cry during therapy, but I did on Monday, for most of the session.

I generally have more distance between my experience and emotions – that’s one of the things that meditation does for you – it gives you perspective. So… I found myself intensely curious about what happens when we drop the walls, remove the distance from our emotions, and become totally vulnerable. Maybe we have some control in those moments. Maybe we feel out of control. But in those moments, we are ripe for change.

I think those times are tipping points too. I think that’s when our unconscious steps forward and takes over. I believe that we can contact the unconscious in these moments and create new schemas for living. By being unskillful in these moments, we can confirm a person’s negative, unconscious, core beliefs. By being skillful – kind, gentle, and loving – and acting to give an upset person what they really need, we can change core beliefs and help someone find a more fulfilling way to be in the world.

Meeting someone’s emotional needs is, of course, an awesome thing. Be kind, be gentle, be loving. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s cloudy out there this morning with occasional showers, but it looks like the bulk of today’s rain will miss us. Expect a mostly cloudy morning and partly cloudy afternoon with occasional light sprinkles (we had about .04” last night). Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 50’s in the afternoon. Strong wind, 32% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow will likely start out with Nothing, but clear sky is another possibility. There’s a pretty good chance of frost too, especially if you live above the Nothing layer. Temps will be in the low to mid 30’s early and the low 50’s in the afternoon. We’ll see sunshine midday followed by high cloudy in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Friday looks cloudy early with sprinkles in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and mid 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 2% chance of rainbows. Saturday morning looks torrentially wet, followed by rainbows on Saturday afternoon. That’ll be followed by very active weather through the middle of next week.

Road and Mountain Biking

I know you’re curious about the dirt, so I went and inspected it for you yesterday. The Kleeway was tacky. You’ll have to check all the other trails yourself. One thing to keep in mind is that the snow level is down pretty low today, so it may be snowing on the 44 Road trails. In addition, it’s been quite windy up there, and we know there are 20 trees down on 8-Mile. Be prepared for fallen trees on upper-elevation trails. For those of you who like to give back, there are two work parties in Post Canyon on Saturday (see below) and a work party at Falls Creek the following weekend.
