Thursday. Get some good dirt before it’s gone!

DSC_5633
There’s a lot of weather headed Mt. Hood’s way over the next few days, but fortunately not as much weather as is headed to the Olympics and other mountains north of us. We’ll see periods of rain alternating with lesser periods of snow over the next several days. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

For today, expect clouds in the morning and light rain overnight. The snow level will be 1500′ this morning, rising to 5500′ by 4pm, 6500′ by 7pm when the precip hits, and 8500′ by tomorrow morning. We’ll see .3-.4” water value (WV) tonight, and that will all fall as rain-not-snow. Wind today will be W 20-25 all day, picking up after midnight.

Tomorrow starts with sprinkles or light rain – depends on the actual storm path – with the precip backing off after 2pm for a cloudy afternoon and misty evening. The snow level will be 8500′-9000′ all day, falling to 7500′ after midnight. Wind will be W 40 in the morning and SW 35 in the afternoon.

Saturday looks more exciting, with mist early, heavy rain midday, and snow overnight. The snow level will be 7500′ in the morning, around 6000′ when the heavy precip hits, 4000′ at the back edge of that weather system, and (wow) 1500′ by Sunday morning. We’ll see mist in the morning. When the weather system hits, we’ll see a quick burst of rain, around 1” WV. After that moves through and the snow level drops, we’ll see another .2-.3” WV, for 2-3” of new snow. Wind will be SW 40-50 in the morning, swinging to NW 20 after 4pm.

The snow level will be down around 1500′ on Sunday with .3-.4” WV, for 3-5” of new snow with NW wind at 25 early and 45 in the afternoon. That’s all fine and dandy, but it’s looking like we’ll see 2” of warm rain on Monday. Hello autumn. Hello atmospheric rivers. Grab yourself a pineapple beverage and hang on for the ride!

Gorge Wind Forecast

As I said yesterday, we’re set up for a very active weather period over the next few days. That will give us some wind in the Gorge, but it’s going to be difficult to get the timing right. That said… today looks like a near-zero wind day, with W 5-10 possible this afternoon through the whole Gorge.

A warm front moves through tomorrow, and a cold front approaches behind it. That’ll set the Gorge up for gusty 22-25 pretty much all day (backing off late) through pretty much the whole Gorge. It does look like the wind will back off in the eastern Gorge before it backs off in the western Gorge, so staying near the edge of the low clouds might be the right call.

A cold front swings through on Saturday. A big, strong, burly cold front. We’ll see gusty, up-and-down westerlies in the morning that pick up to 25-29 in the afternoon. The steadiest wind will be, of course, east of the low clouds, likely east of Mosier. You can look at the satellite picture to find the sunshine and steadiest wind. At this point, Sunday looks like 10-13 early and 26-30 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was eating nachos with a friend last night, and we were talking about working with outlier populations. You know, people who are at the six-sigma end of the bell curve? This, by the way, seems like a good place to recommend Gladwell’s book Outliers (Gladwell two days in a row!).

There’s something that happens with outlier populations, much like something happens when physics switches to the quantum level: the old rules no longer apply. New rules need to be formulated. Outliers, at whichever end of the spectrum they lie, don’t seem to respond to interventions in the same manner as regular-old-folks.

Are you an outlier? I bet there are a lot of you in this group. You’ve had to create new ways of being, new ways of learning. In many cases, you’ve lived by the creative power of your mind, rather than by the syllabi of life. This is not to say that the rules don’t apply to outliers, but outliers need to create their own framework for living, because the world doesn’t make sense if they don’t.

It’s okay if the world doesn’t make sense, outlier. Follow your heart, keep learning and growing, and you’ll be okay. Do awesome things. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It is cloudy this morning, and as I’ve been sitting here researching and writing, it’s been getting cloudier. Let’s just say it’ll remain partly to mostly cloudy all day today with some sprinkles possible this evening. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 50’s this afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

Tomorrow looks mostly cloudy with sprinkles. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. 31% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks cloudy with sprinkles early, heavy rain in the afternoon, and sprinkles overnight. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind, 98% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks cloudy, cooler, and spirnkly.

Road and Mountain Biking

I have a couple of trail reports: Whoopdee is supposedly in perfect shape. There is blowdown on Mitchell Ridge in the “new, lower” section of the trail just after a gentle left turn. The Kleeway is in great shape. I still don’t have reports from the 44 Road, other than 20 trees down on 8 Mile. Perhaps all of you have taken that as a sign that going up there is fruitless? Anyway, there are two trail work parties Saturday morning. They both meet at 9am at Family Man staging area. Come give back to the trails you love so much. Karma, my friends. It’s what’s for breakfast on Saturday.

Coming up this evening, there’s free Zumba at the Mt. Hood Community Center at 6:30 and free yoga (taught by Tish, who’s amazing) at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30. There’s also free Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30 tomorrow night and Kayak Polo at the Hood River Pool at 8:30.

Coming up Friday night, it’s the annual Gala Fashion Show at the Hood River Inn at 7pm. All proceeds benefit the Hood River Christmas Project. There are two trail work parties on Saturday, both meeting at 9am at Family Man. One will work on the 130 trail, and one will work on other random projects. Be there, or be square.

Have an awesome day today!
