Wednesday. MixedPrecipPocalypse

I had a look at some ski resort websites, and it looks like T-Line is operating Bruno and Pucci’s today with current weather of snow/rain mix. I had a look at NWAC, and 2” of snow fell at Meadows last night before the snow switched to rain. Better than I expected, but still not enough to really get ski season rolling. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Today on Mt. Hood, there will be low clouds and light mixed precip in the morning followed by heavier precip tonight. The snow level will be 6000′ early, rising to 8000′ with the next round of precip and possibly to 9000′ overnight. You know what that means… rain. We’ll see .6” water value (WV) or so tonight, and that will all fall as rain, glorious rain. Wind today will be SW 25-30 all day.

Tomorrow morning is a little questionable for precip, as it really depends on the storm path and shower locations, but we’ll see heavier precip overnight. The snow level will be 9000′ early, 6500′ around 4pm, 5500′ when the heaviest precip hits, and 3000′ overnight. It appears some of the precip will fall as mixed rain and snow, followed by increasingly snowy snow. With .7” in the forecast between 4pm Thursday and 4am Friday, we can expect 3-5” of snow accumulation. Wind tomorrow will be SW 50 early, going to W 25-30 after 4pm.

Friday looks showery with the snow level at 3000′. We’ll see 1-3” of new snow, with W wind at 25-30.

Saturday looks like it’ll bring a round of heavier precip with the snow level at 5500′ early, quickly rising to 7500′. Looks like 1-2” of (mostly) rain. Sunday currently looks like it’ll have a snow level of 5500′-6000′ with .5-1.0” of precip. If we get lucky, we could get snow from that! Monday looks warm and wet with the snow level at 8000′.

Gorge Wind Forecast

The wind sensors at both Stevenson and Rooster Rock are frozen this morning, which fooled me for about 10 seconds. And then I looked at the gradient, which was E .18 at 6am. So, let’s call that freezing rain at Stevenson and Rooster last night, most likely, and call the wind forecast for today E 35-45 in the morning and E 50-55 in the afternoon. Nuking, in other words.

Speaking of, when I drove in yesterday, the entire river was a wall of white smoke at Rooster Rock. Impressive.

Expect east wind tomorrow (Thursday) morning at 40-45, fading during the day and (hopefully) switching to light west wind in the evening. Friday looks like W 5-10 and Saturday looks like E 40.

For those of you wanting to watch the wind speeds at Stevenson, you can check the town’s weather station.

Random Morning Thoughts

A friend of mine sent me someone’s else’s handwritten reflection this morning. This lovely note talked about the moments when we are waiting. To bring this into the concrete realm, think about when you are standing in line waiting to order a cup of coffee. In those moments, we generally are lost in thought or caught up in anticipation or maybe even feeling frustration and annoyance that the line isn’t moving faster.

This reflection my friend shared suggested we relax into those moments. We can use them as an opportunity to have a brief sense of clarity. Calm. Peacefulness. We can tell ourselves, “Hey, I don’t have anything to do right now except be right here in the moment, and I’m going to take advantage of that!”

If you’re in the Gorge, you likely don’t have anything to do right now except be in the moment. It’s icy and snowy. Schools are closed. Sure, you might have a pile of work waiting for you somewhere, and you might have errands to run, but there’s not much you can do. Let go. Just for now. Relax into this snowy, misty, gray, icy day. It’s okay, I promise. You’re on vacation.

And if you’re not in the Gorge, see if you can find a few moments today to create a mini vacation. It can be a minute long. 30 seconds. 5 seconds. It doesn’t really matter. It’s just a chance for your nervous system to chill out. Try it right now: unfocus your eyes. Take a deep breath. Smile. Take another breath. Come back to the world. See – vacations live inside you. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I was afraid of the weather, so I ran away. I’m in Salmon Creek, where it’s 39 degrees and misting. You may be in the Gorge, where it’s 29 degrees and misting. According to the Hood River Weather chatroom, all sorts of wintry precip fell in the Gorge last night: sleet, freezing rain, snow… it depends on your location and how deep the cold pool was. Deeper pool = snow. Shallower pool = something else. And that leads us to tonight…

With strong east wind gradients predicted across the Cascades today, cold air will continue to filter into the Gorge. That’s a problem. You can expect temps today in the upper 20’s, maxing out at 32 degrees or less. It should be mostly dry (with just some mist from low clouds) through about 4pm, perhaps 7pm, when the next round of precip starts. This system is warmer, and the cold pool is shallower, so we’re much more likely to see freezing rain than a wintry mix. I think I’ll stay in Portland tonight. Strong east wind. No rainbows, in case you were wondering. Thank god I have one tattooed on my shoulder.

Tomorrow looks dark and gray with low clouds. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and (please, oh please) the mid to upper 30’s in the afternoon. That temp change depends in part on a switch from east wind to west wind, and models do tend to be overly optimistic on that – they are predicting E 40-45 tomorrow for much of the day. Anyway, let’s hope for the best! We’ll see mist and sprinkles during the day, and depending on the exact track of the next storm system, we may see showers. Freezing or not freezing remains to be seen. Heavier rain starts around 7pm. Sometime after 7pm, a low pressure system will cross the Cascades, and that should finally warm up the Gorge. In other words, it’s possible we’ll see another round of freezing rain late tomorrow (Thursday) before a switch to rain tomorrow night. Tough forecast tomorrow.

Friday looks much warmer, with temps in the mid 30’s early and the upper 40’s in the afternoon with light sprinkles during the day and dry weather overnight. Rainbows may be possible. Saturday looks rainy. Sunday does too.

Upcoming Events

Well, let’s see. First thing this morning is the icepocalypse, downgraded to a wintrymixmess. But don’t you worry – there’s more to come tonight, so stock up on dry firewood and grab a good book. There may or may not be events going on tonight, but many of them may be canceled, so I’m hesitant to hazard a guess. I suspect tonight is a good night to declare a vacation from all things normal, grab a hot toddy or cup of cocoa with homemade marshmallows, and spend time with good friends.

Have an awesome day today!
