Thursday. The Gorge is your skating rink, Mt. Hood is your outdoor shower?

2015-03-20_10-37-58 M=C-Edit
It looks like the ski resorts did all right with yesterday’s weather system, meaning they didn’t receive all that much rain. It’s cloudy and warm up there this morning, with the snow level currently around 6500′ (it’s 8am, in case you were wondering). Precip will start around 4pm today, continuing through tomorrow morning. In that time period, we’ll see the snow level drop from 6500′ to 5500′ when the precip hits, 5000′ by midnight, and 3500′ by Friday morning. We’ll receive approximately .6” water value (WV), for 3-5” of new snow – it’s likely it will start out as mixed precipitation. Wind today will be SW 45 in the morning, ramping up to SW 55 in the afternoon and swinging to W 15-20 overnight. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow looks cloudy with flurries through mid-afternoon and partly cloudy or clear overnight. The snow level will be 3500′ all day. There is quite a bit of precipitation in the Pacific Northwest tomorrow, but it looks like the bulk of it will stay north and west of Mt. Hood. That leaves us with snow flurries during the day, for 1-3” of new snow. Wind tomorrow will be SW 30 all day long.

Saturday looks dry and cloudy for much of the day as precip swings to the north. However, we’ll see the precip pick up after 10pm, likely as a mix of rain and snow. The snow level will be 5000′ in the morning, rising to 6500′ in the afternoon. Wind on Saturday will be SW 35 early and SW 45-50 in the afternoon and evening, picking up even more after midnight. As of right now, Sunday looks like a bit of a crapshoot, with the snow level around 5500′-6000′ and 1” of precip with very strong SW wind. We’re probably going to see some snow, but I’d like to wait another day or so before putting numbers on it, given the marginal snow level.

Monday looks like 6500′ snow level with the bulk of the precip (thankfully) going south of Mt. Hood. Tuesday, as of right now, looks very warm – snow level 8000′-9000′ – and very wet. Let’s all cross our fingers that we are spared the pineapples on Tuesday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

If you happen to drive through the Gorge this morning, take the time to stop at Rooster Rock. It’s nuking. The last reading I saw on the iWind/iKite was an average of 54mph with a gradient of .32. That’s not the biggest I’ve seen (.41 takes the record), but still. Still. That’s a lot of isobars. An upper level low will move onshore late this afternoon, taking the wind from “nuking” to “LTV”. You can expect very little wind, or maybe even light westerlies overnight. Expect light west wind tomorrow. Saturday looks like east 30.

For those of you wanting to watch the wind speeds at Stevenson, you can check the town’s weather station.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been surviving on the generosity of others the last few days, which is always a humbling experience. I decided to run away from the Gorge for a couple of days to avoid driving to school in the freezing rain. I had to call in a lot of support to make this happen.

One person is watching my cat. One person is playing with her. I stayed with some friends in Vancouver on Tuesday night, and a friend loaned me her downtown Portland condo last night.

I could have just slept in my car and let the cat be a cat, but there’s something that feels good about letting people help.

When we let others help us, we form webs of interconnection. Some people view this as obligation – they think that if they let someone help, then they’ll be obligated to return the favor in the future. That’s one way of looking at this situation. Another is this: when we let people help us, we get to give back to that person in the future. Giving out of choice feels good. It makes us feel worthy. It makes us feel useful. It makes us feel like we matter.

When we receive, we learn that people are there for us. And they learn that we are there for them. There’s really no obligation. There’s just connection. Humans are wired to connect. So, ask for help. Let people help. Let yourself be held in the generosity and kindness of others. Your world is your family. You just have to let them close. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Sounds like the Heights and the upper valleys saw some ice last night but the river level was spared the worst of the storming. We’ll see light sprinkles today, with occasional heavier showers (the bulk of the precip is going to stay west of the Gorge). That’s probably going to fall as ice at upper elevations until late evening before westerly flow brings the temps up a bit. Temps will be right around freezing this morning and (hopefully) in the mid to upper 30’s this afternoon.

Tomorrow looks cloudy with a chance of partly cloudy sky and a few glimpses of the sun in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early. NOAA’s claiming upper 40’s in the afternoon. I suspect we’ll see low to mid 40’s. Light wind. 8% chance of rainbows.

Saturday looks mostly cloudy. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. East wind. NO rainbows. Sunday looks rainy. Monday looks mostly dry. Tuesday looks very wet.

Upcoming Events

After spending the last two days in Portland, I’m feeling rather disconnected from the Gorge events. Today’s Thursday, and that means there are 3 free classes at 6:30: Zumba at the Mt. Hood Community Center, Yoga at Samadhi, and Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen. There’s kayak polo at the Hood River pool at 8pm tonight. Tomorrow morning at 7am is the Kickstand Coffee Run. Show up, jog 4.1 miles, and get a free cup of coffee and a donut.

Have an awesome day today!
