Wednesday. It’s June. Are you ready for a hot spell?

2015-10-27 12-39-49 (C)
Well… at least it’s going to be nice and warm for the wind that we’ll have for the next couple of days, and at least it’s going to be smoking hot along with the no-wind the following three days! Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

We’ll start off today (Wednesday) with not-all-that much wind, perhaps 5-10 or 10-13. By noon, the wind will pick up to 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles. By early afternoon, we’ll have 25-29 from Rowena to Maryhill with 22-25 at Stevenson, gusty 17-21 near Hood River, and 22-25 in the far-east Gorge.

Thursday starts off with 10-13 pretty much everywhere as a weak weather system makes its way eastward. In the afternoon, the westerlies will pick up to 17-20 from Stevenson to Maryhill with a chance of 21-24 at the Rowena stretch of the river.

As of right now, it’s looking like we’ll see light and variable wind on Friday, meaning W 5-10 or less in the morning and E 5-10 or so in the afternoon. Saturday looks like E 20-25, strongest at Rooster (of course) and Sunday currently looks like E 10-15 at Stevenson and Rooster.

Finally, I’ll just keep reminding you of this one: CGWA has a bunch of contests happening this summer – photo, Strava, and video. Get more information about those contests right here.

I recommend you do get the wind today if you’re a Wind Johnnie, because we’re going to take at least a couple of days off as high pressure builds back in late tonight. Monday may start off with light westerlies at 7-11 or maybe 10-13. Models say the river will go glassy by mid-morning. This is one of those scenarios where reality may beat the models, in which case we could see 7-11 through the afternoon, but I wouldn’t put money on it.

Tuesday looks glassy near Hood River in the morning with easterlies near Hood River at 5-7 in the afternoon. In the western Gorge, we’ll have easterlies at 10-15 early. Stevenson will peak midday at E 15-20 and Rooster will peak midday at E 20-25. Given this forecast, I am potentially looking for a ride home from the downtown Portland area (or within a few miles of there) for me and my bike on Tuesday evening around 6:45.

No, I don’t feel like forecasting snow today.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was out having a quick jog on the Gorge 400 on my way to school yesterday. I haven’t been running much lately, and I was hurting as I was plodding my way along the trail. At one point, I asked myself why I was doing this thing, this lumbering through the woods not feeling good.

I realized I didn’t want to stop, and that got me wondering what it was that I was finding enjoyable about this sweaty, clumsy, plodding thing I was doing. After all, I was just noticing the pain I was in. The pleasure certainly wasn’t obvious.

As I jogged along (lumbered… plodded) I realized that I was enjoying the movement of my muscles and the momentary sense of freedom as both feet left the ground in the middle of a stride. And once I noticed that, I was able to enjoy my workout, rather than suffering through it.

Now, I’m not saying that we have to find a way to enjoy everything. But most of the time, if we’re doing something, there’s some pleasure in the activity. If there’s no pleasure at all, it may be time to reevaluate our participation in that thing – after all, why should we punish ourselves by doing things that bring zero pleasure? And if there is some pleasure, we can notice that along with whatever suffering is there, making the task more balanced, emotionally speaking.

So… next time you’re plodding along doing something (a jog, a job, a whatever), take a moment and see if there’s anything to balance out that heaviness. They can exist side-by-side, and just a little pleasure will go a long way. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

If 80 degree weather isn’t warm enough for you, don’t worry, because it’s going to be much, much hotter this weekend. 95 is the forecast for Saturday and Sunday. Whoa. But don’t worry – the world isn’t warming. Anyway… Expect temps in the upper 50’s this morning and the mid 80’s this afternoon with partly cloudy sky early and sunshine later. Light wind early, strong wind later, no rainbows.

Thursday might be partly cloudy and there’s also the slightest chance of sprinkles. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 1.5% chance of rainbows. Friday looks quite sunny and hot. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the upper 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

There are plenty of mountain biking trails open, but I have some road biking news today: Vista Ridge is open, meaning you can now ride Three Summits (Lake Branch, Vista, Cooper Spur). Remember that there are short stretches of gravel on Vista Ridge now. In other news… well, I don’t have any other news today!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start off with free yoga at the Heartgate Sanctuary at 8:30. There’s
ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5 tonight and the women’s Post n’ Pinot
mountain bike ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30. Tomorrow night is the race-pace Post n’
Pint ride followed by a going-away party for Terrydactyl.

This weekend’s going to be hot, with a forecast of 95. It’s Springfest this weekend in
White Salmon. The Hood 2 River Relay is Saturday from Mt. Hood to Hood River.
There’s a trail work party meeting at 9am on Saturday at Binn’s Hill Staging Area,
and there’s a 1k, 5k and 10k race as part of Springfest on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!
