Thursday. Hi, June. Nice to see you for a day.

2015-11-15 15-08-47 (C)-Edit
It’s a lovely cloudy start to the morning in the western Gorge, and looking at the satellite images, those clouds extend in some form all the way out into the desert. This morning’s clouds come from a weak frontal system that’s swinging through our area in advance of a ridge of high pressure that will build in late today. This weather system isn’t really stopping the wind – the 7am gradient sat at .08 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc) with speeds on the river ranging from the upper single digits to the low teens. Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

For the rest of today (Thursday, in case you were confused), we’ll see this: The westerlies will stay in the 12-15 range, max, from Stevenson to Mosier this morning with 13-16 east of The Dalles by mid-morning. Come early afternoon, we’ll see 23-26 from Rowena to Maryhill with 15-18 at other Gorge locations. It’s going to be on the gusty side and a bit unreliable, but given that we’re looking at zero west wind for the next three days, you might want to chase it!

Looking at Friday, high pressure builds inland. We’ll see W 10-13 or less right off the bat, quickly dropping to zero and switching to E 5-10 in the afternoon. Saturday looks a bit windier, but not from my preferred direction – we’ll have east wind at 20-25 at Stevenson and Rooster with the possibility of 30-35 at Rooster midday. Sunday looks like east 15-20 with a high temp of 100 degrees.

Now, as we all know, a high of 100 degrees indicates a huge wind day in the near future. As of right now, models are suggesting that day will be Tuesday or Wednesday or both. Personally, I’m voting for Wednesday, and I would appreciate it if you would vote for that day along with me, because I see my therapist on Tuesday and am not certain if a 30-40mph west wind day will qualify for his “inclement weather in your area” clause, allowing me to cancel without penalty. Thoughts on whether an epic westerly day qualifies?

Finally, I’ll just keep reminding you of this one: CGWA has a bunch of contests happening this summer – photo, Strava, and video. Get more information about those contests right here.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

No, I don’t feel like forecasting snow today.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of my professors last night was talking about how we students may forget some day all the hard, tearful work that went into forming us as therapists. I’m pretty certain the process won’t fade from my mind any time soon, if ever – personal growth is difficult, as many of you know. It takes bravery and patience and faith.

Other aspects of our lives require equal amounts of hard work. Becoming a proficient skier, snowboarder, kiteboarder or windsurfer (windsurfing may be the most difficult sport on the planet to master) takes determination. Once we reach a certain level of mastery of our work or our play, we can forget what we’ve achieved and start berating ourselves for not achieving more or continuing to move forward.

It’s important to stop occasionally and give ourselves a pat on the back. No matter our level of achievement, our career trajectory, or our educational background, we’ve all worked hard to get where we are. Our accomplishments deserve recognition and admiration, if not from others, then from ourselves.

Not only are we alive, but we are thriving in at least some domains. You, particularly, are thriving, or you wouldn’t be reading this! Take a little time now to celebrate. It’ll make your day more awesome, I promise. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 716 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Oh sweet blessed honey bees – it’s cloudy and cool! Expect a cloudy first half of the day and a sunny evening with temps in the low 60’s early and the low 70’s this afternoon. Moderate west wind. 27% chance of rainbows. Friday looks sunny. Temps will be in the low 50’s early (open up your windows and let that air in!) and in the upper 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Saturday looks f’ing hot. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and upper 90’s in the afternoon. Light east wind. No rainbows. Sunday’s forecast is calling for 100 degrees. Ack. Definitely no rainbows on Sunday, unless you see them while you’re running through the sprinkler.

Road and Mountain Biking

Looking out my window, I can see sprinkles falling on the higher elevation trails. So, if you ride up high today, you might find some tacky dirt. In road biking news, it looks pleasant and cool, if a bit windy today. Expect zero wind tomorrow, with a nice cool morning. It’ll be way to freakin’ hot to ride this weekend, unless you’re looking for some sort of Bikram Biking experience. There is a trail work party meeting at Binn’s Hill on Saturday morning at 9am.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include pickleball at May Street Elementary at 5:15, the Post n’ Pint ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30, followed by Terrydactyl’s going away party from 7 to 9. There’s community yoga at 6 at Samadhi, Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30, and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30.

Tomorrow is First Friday in Hood River, and Timberline and 2nd Wind Sports are getting together to throw a snow rail jam. Details aren’t quite set, so you’ll just have to be downtown tomorrow.

The Hood 2 River Relay is Saturday, there’s a post canyon work party at Binn’s Hill Saturday, and the White Salmon Springfest Run is Sunday,, and one last thing – Sunday looks like our first triple digit day of the year!

Have an awesome day today!
