Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Wednesday morning, everyone! If you, like me, have been spending an inordinate amount of time on the water, you’ll be happy to hop on the rest day scheduled for today. We’ll be back on the river starting Thursday, and if the models are correct, we’ll be staying on the river through Monday-ish. Now, before I dive into the forecast… I found a helmet floating in the Columbia between the Waterfront Park and the White Salmon Bridge on Monday. If you are missing your helmet, please shoot me an email and I will return it to you.

On to the wind. Wednesday looks like this: 95 degrees in the Gorge, 97 in the desert, and 93 in the metro area. That’s enough for light west flow, but not enough to get you on the river unless reality really overperforms. Westerlies will stay below 10mph all day with the exception of some teen-strength dawn patrol at Viento. It’s possible we’ll have 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River in the evening as the city cools before the desert. River flow is 109-157kcfs, river temp is 70F, and high temp forecast is 95F.

Thursday starts off with light west flow, less than 10mph. During the day, a disturbance will be slowly pushing closer over the offshore waters. Thanks to that, to offshore high pressure, and to a low exiting east into Idaho, we’ll see the westerlies pick up. By late morning, we’ll have gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Models suggest this offshore gizmo will knock the wind down to 14-17 from Viento to Swell with gusty 21-24 from Hood river to Avery and 13-16 at Rufus. East of there: hot and calm. High temp: 93F and muggy.

Get ready for a big day on Friday! High pressure settles in offshore, a trough drags much cooler air into the west side, and the far eastern desert stays quite hot. Result: dawn patrol at 22-26 from Viento to Mosier with 20-23 in the eastern Gorge and perhaps at Stevenson. Give it a couple hours, and you’ll have 28-32 from Viento to Arlington with 23-26 at Stevenson and Threemile. High temp: 82F. Saturday: 25-28, but you’ll have to go east of Mosier for it. Sunday: 21-24 in the Corridor. Monday: probably still westerlies. Models hint at two or three days of warmer weather and offshore wind for the middle of next week. No promises on that from this long vantage point!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

As of Monday, 8/17, the following trails are closed due to fire danger: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and andy lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
