Wednesday Gorge wind forecast & Gorge weather forecast: breezy all week with thunderstorms likely Thursday.

Hi friends! It’s Wednesday, and breezy weather is on tap today in Ye Olde Gorge Wind Forecast. Tomorrow gets interesting โ€“ we’re expecting big pressure gradients but also big instability and the potential for big thunderstorms. The word โ€œbigโ€ is also an apt descriptor on Friday as a cold front drags lots of clouds into…

SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! It’s Wednesday, and breezy weather is on tap today in Ye Olde Gorge Wind Forecast. Tomorrow gets interesting โ€“ we’re expecting big pressure gradients but also big instability and the potential for big thunderstorms. The word โ€œbigโ€ is also an apt descriptor on Friday as a cold front drags lots of clouds into the west side and stabilizes the atmosphere, leaving us with lots and lots of west wind. Moderate westerlies are likely to continue through the weekend. It appears the wind will back off some to start next week, but the details of temps are unclear. Beyond Tuesday: too much uncertainty to make guesses.

Wednesday started with pressures of 29.92/29.81/29.80 with 30.36 offshore. Westerlies were 19-22mph from Viento to the Hatch, 13-16mph near Rowena, and under 10mph elsewhere to start the day. The metro area is mostly clear this morning, and temps are forecast to nearly equalize across the Cascades today. If this plays out, strongest wind will be early: 21-24mph from Viento to the Hatch with 17-20mph at Hood River and 13-16mph at Mosier. Stevenson should join in by late morning.

Models knock the wind down to 16-19mph this afternoon and fill it in from Stevenson to The Dalles. After 5pm, it drops to 13-16mh. River flow over the last 24 hours was 168-212kcfs, river temp is 59.5F, and high temp forecast is 83F.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

Thursday looks warm, muggy, and windy. Moderate offshore high pressure combines with an impressive heat low in Idaho and a surface low moving into the desert in the afternoon. Surface gradients look awesome, but impressive instability will also be present. Your best chance is in the morning. Early wind will be 22-25mph from Viento to the Hatch with 10-13mph to the east. Midday: 24-27mph from Stevenson to Mosier with 20-23mph from Lyle to Doug’s. East: under 15mph. If, and this is a big if, the thunderstorms don’t shut things down, we’ll have 28-32mph from Mosier to Arlington in the afternoon with the potential for more after 5pm. High temps: 85F in Hood River and low 90s in the desert.

As I mentioned earlier, a cold front swings through Friday and stabilizes things. We’ll start with a deep marine layer on the west side and clear sky to the east with big pressure gradients. We start with 22-25mph from Stevenson to the Hatch, 19-22mph from Mosier to Doug’s, and 27-31mph from Avery to Hermiston. If the wind can survive the thunderstorm chances, we’ll have 29-36mph from Stevenson to Threemile in the afternoon with 25-28mph near Hermiston. After 2pm, the strongest wind shifts east of Rufus, and after 5pm, the wind dips to 20-23mph west of Lyle and 28-32mph from Lyle to Hermiston. High temps: 66F in Hood River and 79F in the desert. Nice temp gradient!

As of this morning, Saturday looks like 21-24+, and Sunday is very uncertain. High temps will be in the upper 60s on Saturday and low 70s on Sunday. Models hint at lesser wind for the first couple days of next week as there’s some potential for warming. As of this morning, uncertainty is too high to really make predictions for next week, so I’ll leave you here for now. See you on the Nch’i Wwana soon!

HYPERLOCAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE

THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! Fun stuff in the forecast the next few days: near-perfect weather today; a solid chance of thunderstorms tomorrow; super strong west wind on Friday. All this combined puts us at risk of wildfires, so do be careful with flames the next few days. The last thing we need is YOU starting a fire when Ma Nature is ready to toss some bolts this way!

Glenwood, Tehran, and Havana this morning

Pulling our heads out of the sand this morning, we look around and see…. 40 degrees in Glenwood, 50-60 in the lowlands, and mid-40s elsewhere. Today’s forecast for our friends in Tehran, Iran, is 85F and 12% (perfect, except that everyone is terrified due to us bombing the shit out of them). Today’s forecast for our friends in Havana, Cuba, is 80F with humidity of 82F (brutal) and a chance of thunderstorms. Things aren’t perfect in Cuba, by any means, but we’re not making it any better with blockades and threats of violence…

Baby ground squirrel update

Speaking of violence and non-violence, the baby ground squirrel is curled up against my belly while Iโ€m writing this forecast. Did you know that squirrels (of all sorts) are one of the few wild animals that will seek out human assistance when in distress. Clearly they believe in the goodness of our hearts, even if some of us struggle to avoid the siren call of hatred.

Today’s Gorge weather forecast

Today’s weather: prefect for being kind to each other. We’ll see temps rise to 80F in Stevenson, 83F in Hood River, and 87F or so from The Dalles into the desert. West wind will be 20-25mph west of Mosier in the morning with 20-25mph west of The Dalles in the afternoon with 10-15mph east of The Dalles. We’ll pick up a few mid and high clouds this afternoon, just enough to color the sky at sunset.

Thursday’s Gorge weather forecast

SPC (Storm Prediction Center, a branch of the US Government that you should want funded, unlike the slush fund & ballroom, which should not be funded) has us under a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms on Thursday. This is a rare forecast, and one to take seriously. In the morning, we’ll start warm, potentially record warm, as dewpoints hover in the 55-60F range โ€“ MUGGY! A combo of factors in the afternoon sends instability soaring. We’re at risk of thunderstorms, potentially severe with hail, into the evening. Also possible: downpours thanks to MASSIVE available water: PWAT will be 0.98โ€ to 1.26โ€, right around 3 sigmas! Prior to that: temps rise to 85F (Hood River), 90F (The Dalles), and 93F (Pasco) which drives west wind at 25-30mph all the way from Stevenson to the Arlington Triangle. Caveat: if clouds are more extensive than expected, highs would be cooler, temps would be lower.

Friday’s Gorge weather forecast

A cold front swings in from the west side on Friday. This sweeps out the mugginess, ends the risk of thunderstorms, and knocks high temps down 15-20 degrees depending on location. Clouds fill in as far east as Mosier or The Dalles or somewhere in the morning and only partly dissipate in the afternoon. This sets us up for super-strong westerlies, and the decrease in humidity will up the fire danger. High temps: 66F in Hood River, 70F in The Dalles, and 80F in the desert.

Extended Gorge weather forecast

Cool, (66-74), breezy conditions continue Saturday. In the morning, 850mb temps will bottom out at 0C to 2C, which puts Glenwood and Dufur at risk for frost and puts Parkdale in the 35-38F range. We’ll keep a close eye on this. Temps warm by a few degrees on Sunday, and the wind continues. Starting early next week, we may or may not see a spike in temps. It depends where the forecast ridge sets up. For now, let’s just go with โ€œsomewhat warmerโ€ and โ€œsomewhat less windyโ€ and leave it here for now. Safe travels. -TATAS
