Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a clear and beautiful fall day with high pressure in the desert and a heat low over western Oregon. That setup will keep the east wind blowing all day long. Expect 25-30 at Rooster until 2pm or so, followed by a drop to 20-25. The Stevenson to Home Valley stretch will take a couple hours for the wind to really get going, but we’ll have 20-25 there for most of the day, backing off to 15-20 in the afternoon. Areas east of Home Valley will have light easterlies this morning and east wind at 5mph or so this afternoon. According to the Oregon State Parks page for Rooster Rock, the park is open. I hope that is correct since I’m telling you so!

Thursday will be another east wind day as high pressure remains in the desert and a weak low pressure system drifts off the Oregon Coast. We’ll have 20-25 in the morning near Rooster Rock with 15-20 or a bit less near Stevenson. By 11am, the wind will really back off, dropping to 5-10 out of the east at all locations.

The wind will switch from easterly to westerly overnight. Friday starts with inconsistent west wind at 12-15 between Stevenson and The Dalles. As a weather system approaches, the wind will climb to inconsistent 24-28 east of The Dalles with gusty, unreliable 13-16 between Stevenson and The Dalles. The most consistent wind will be in the western Gorge before the rain starts, and in the eastern Gorge after the front passes. You’ll know that has happened because the clouds will break up and blue sky will appear in the east.

Saturday looks showery in the western Gorge with gusty 22-25 in the eastern Gorge. Sunday currently look like 18-22 east of Hood River.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was thinking last night about the Eagle Creek Fire. The endless green carpet of the Gorge trees has always been a spiritual resource for me, and I’ve been feeling unsettled since it was so carelessly and severely damaged. Part of my unease arises from a newfound deep understanding that all things, even the Gorge, are impermanent, subject to disappear or change with no advance warning.

We can take this as further encouragement to live a fully present life so that we create vibrant, positive, nurturing memories of the people and places that are important to us.

We cannot stop time. We cannot stop change. But we can create deep, nuanced, vibrant, joyful and powerful memories that serve as spiritual resources when the actual objects of our love have disappeared, as all things do. Enjoy your day fully. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a beautiful starry morning, and that means it’ll be a sunny day. Temps will be near 50 this morning and 80 this afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks sunny. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and mid 80’s in the afternoon. Est wind. No rainbows. Friday might start off clear, but clouds from a fast-moving cold front quickly move in. We’ll see rain start up around 12:44pm near Hood River, becoming showery after 5pm. Moderate west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks sprinkly and partly cloudy with a 99% chance of rainbows, and Sunday looks more dry, with just scattered raindrops.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

According to the USFS website, the McClellan Meadows trail has reopened, meaning the Falls Creek shuttle is still an option. I didn’t call them, though, so I’m only reporting what I read. In Post Canyon, the following trails are currently closed to all users: Dirt Surfer (170/172), 160, 130, Borderline (133), Spaghetti Factory (116), and 197. Trails not closed are riding very, very nice. Trails are also riding nice on Hospital Hill. I haven’t tested Whoopdee and Ronnoc, but I bet they are both good too! One last thing – Post Canyon moto trails are now open for motorized use. Other County lands remain closed to moto.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include ping pong at 5:30 at the Hood River Armory, Zumba at 6pm at St. francis House in Odell, and YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45. There are also sailboat races this evening at the Hood River Marina, and if you have experience, you can usually get on a boat by showing up with a six-pack.

Looking ahead to this weekend, there’s not much on the schedule other than a cyclocross race happening at Cooper Spur. With rain in the forecast, that one should be muddy and cold, perfect cyclocross conditions.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
