Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Wednesday morning, and as somewhat expected, yesterday’s atmospheric instability did in the wind. Instability persists in the far desert today, and an offshore low hangs offshore. Despite all this, it’s still going to be windy. Make the most of it, because tomorrow’s a windsport rest day more than likely. Westerlies of the moderate to strong sort return for Friday and Saturday, but there’s still not a ton of agreement on exact strength. For now, let’s call it “enough”.

Let’s start with the overall setup: marine clouds made it to the Gorge to start the day, low pressure is offshore, and very hot (100F) weather is forecast for the desert. The temp gradient will drive the wind growth today. Early wind is 19-22 from Stevenson to Hood River with Viento in the upper 20’s and the eastern Gorge at 10ish. By late morning, we should see the wind build to gusty 25-29 or even low 30’s from Stevenson to Rufus. Afternoon: thank the desert heating, because it brings the wind up to 29-33 from Hood River to Arlington (OK, Hood River’s a maybe) with gusty 20-26 between Stevenson and Swell (or Hood River). Threemile should be in the 22-26 range. That said, significant atmospheric instability will be present in far northeast Oregon, and that could affect wind out east. It’s also worth noting that there’s a fair bit of model spread on wind strength today, and a little less wind than this forecast wouldn’t be all that surprising. Still… plenty of wind to play on the river! Morning pressures: 30.01-29.93-29.87 for 0.13 (pdx-dls) and 0.01 out east. River flow readings are 129-161kcfs, river temp is 70F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 81F. Arlington: 94F.

Offshore low pressure settles in just off Astoria on Thursday. Max temps in the desert fall to the low-mid 90’s. This all combines to decrease the westerlies. The current forecast maxes the wind at 11-14 or so between Stevenson and Hood River or perhaps Mosier in the afternoon after a light start. The desert starts at 11-14 and turns calm. High temp: 87F for Hood River.

The offshore low sticks around on Friday, but an associated front pushes cooler air in to the west side especially in the afternoon. Thermally-induced cross-Cascade gradients increase Models suggest 15-18 to start the day between Stevenson and Mosier with max wind in the mid to upper 20’s between Hood River and Rufus in the afternoon. That’s the model take. Given the setup, I’m guessing the wind will actually be quite gusty. High temp: mid 80’s. Saturday’s ensembles members predict similar wind strength to Friday. It’s worth noting that there’s quite a bit of spread both days, so the forecast isn’t yet certain. Sunday’s wind will definitely be lighter, but it’s not yet clear how light.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The Perseid Meteor Shower peaks this week. Unfortunately, the moon also peaks this week. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
