Gorge Wind Forecast

Looks like today, Wednesday, is another round of “same as yesterday” wind as a rex-block pattern keeps us locked into a stable setup. The only thing different today is a slightly higher chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. We started the day with .07 (PDX-DLS) gradient, flow at 128kcfs and river temp of 71 degrees. Wind was out of the west in the single digits in most locations with light easterlies in the eastern Gorge. We’ll see a slow and steady build to west 17-20 by late morning between Cascade Locks and Mosier. The wind will fill in as far east as Doug’s Beach late in the day. The eastern Gorge will remain light easterly all day.

Thursday looks warmer with slightly less marine layer in the western half of the state. That will knock the peak wind speed down just a bit. That said, we’ll start the day with 12-15 between Stevenson and Swell. By late morning, the wind will rise to 15-18 between Cascade Locks and Hood River. As a trough of low pressure approaches late in the afternoon, the wind will fill in to the Rowena stretch of the river. Wind out east will remain light.

By Friday morning, that trough of low pressure should be over western Washington, with quite a bit more marine layer for folks in the Willamette Valley. This will increase the Gorge westerlies. That said, the dynamic weather will contribute to an afternoon risk of thunder. We’ll also see high clouds overhead. With these factors in place, the wind will probably be rangier and more inconsistent than most of us would prefer. We’ll have 20-24 to start the day from Viento to Mosier. By late morning, the wind should build to inconsistent 24-27 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. Rufus should join in late in the afternoon. Arlington and Roosevelt won’t get windy until after sunset.

It’s possible we’ll see a little bit of rain in the western Gorge on Friday night into Saturday morning. If this happens, the wind will shift a bit further east. That said, models are in disagreement over the exact outcome and dynamics Friday through Sunday. Given the inconsistency in the models, I’m going with a broad-brush forecast for westerlies in the 26-30+ range over the weekend. That wind will likely fill in through the entire Gorge.

Random Morning Thoughts

It seems so obvious to say that we only have so much energy. But we forget. We ignore warning signals, push ourselves beyond our capacity, and then we end up tired, anxious, depressed. We don’t just do this with our own responsibilities; because we care, we take on added responsibilities to our friends, family and communities.

We often forget one simple fact: if we are stretched too thin, if we are exhausted and drained, we cannot provide our full attention and energy to the people and causes we care about.

While I do believe it’s important to give back to the world around us, I also know that it’s important to nourish and care for ourselves so we can give without emptying our own batteries. If we don’t care for “me”, we can’t give to others.

How is this dynamic playing out in your life? Are you saying “yes” to outside commitments before you’ve said “yes” enough to yourself? If you feel stressed, tired, drained or overwhelmed, the answer is probably “yes I am”. If that’s the case, it’s time to do some reflection on what boundaries will allow you to remain emotionally healthy. You’re worth it. You may not feel like it, but I promise you are!

This may involve difficult decisions. Simplifying, cutting and culling can involve grief reactions, or perhaps event guilt. Your sanity is worth it. Be kind to yourself so you have the energy to be kind to others, so you have the energy and creativity to make the world better. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

This morning’s particulate matter count is 120, considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. Just FYI. Anyway, the smoke will continue today with temps near 60 early and in the mid 90’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks like low 60’s early and upper 90’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows. Friday looks just a touch cooler in the afternoon. Morning temps will be in the mid 60’s. Afternoon temps of low 90’s. High clouds too. Moderate to strong westerlies. No rainbows. It’s possible we’ll see a little rain Friday night into Saturday.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and all other SDS and Kreps lands are closed from today on through the end of fire season. That’s when “significant rain” falls and the fire danger is considered over. Also currently closed: Dethman Ridge Road at Odell Creek and Highway 30 at Chenoweth Bridge. The second one has a bypass for bikes and pedestrians in place along The Dalles waterfront trail.

Upcoming Events

Events today include ladies Kite and Windsurf night at the Hood River Event Site starting at 5. At 5:30, there’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory and family-friendly mountain biking at Family Man. At 6, sailboat races happen at the Hood River marina and community Zumba is at St. Francis House.

Coming up Saturday, there’s Gorge Cup windsurfing races at the Event Site and a 50k ultramarathon in Post Canyon. The yearly King of the Hook freestyle event is at the Hood this Saturday evening from 5 to 8. After the King of the Hook finishes up, head to Jackson Park in Hood River for the movie Sing or to Sorosis Park in The Dalles for the movie The Princess Bride.

Other weekend events include Vintage Dufur Days, the Bridge of the Gods Run on Sunday, and the Neon Classic Drag Races in Dallesport Sunday. With all the hype about the upcoming eclipse, you may have forgotten that this Saturday and Sunday morning are the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Although the moon will be relatively bright, the smoke should have cleared out, allowing you to see 40-50 meteors per hour in the northern sky after midnight.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
