Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Tuesday morning, and there’s a Dawn Patrol happening out there. If you think your work day would be better with a pre-work session (and whose day wouldn’t?), get out there! Don’t worry – the wind will stick around today. Tomorrow – probably not at all. Light to moderate westerlies return late Thursday afternoon as a precursor to a much windier day on Friday.

So, Tuesday morning… pressures are 30.07/29.97/29.94 to start the day with 0.10 (pdx-dls) and 0.03 (dls-psc). They should hold throughout the day. This gives us 17-20 from Viento to Mosier to start the day with 21-24 from Stevenson to Hood River midday on through early afternoon. Models suggest the wind will drop to 16-19 and get gusty west of Mosier late afternoon thanks to instability along the Cascade Crest. The Rowena stretch should join this afternoon with 17-20. East of there: Light and variable after a 12-15mph start. High temp: 88F.

Wednesday looks light and variable as temps equalize across the Cascades. Try Sauvie’s or Jones Beach or the south coast for better results. High temp: 94F.

Desert heat combines with an impulse to the north to save the day on Thursday. Morning wind will be light westerly, under 10mph. That holds through midday and picks up to gusty 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon. High temp: 94F and very muggy. You’ll be very stoked to get on the river!

Offshore high pressure, NW flow, and a big cross-Cascade temp gradient align for a “Classic Gorge Setup” on Friday. Dawn Patrol at 22-26mph gives way to 28-32mph all through the Gorge by late morning. High temp: 70-80. There’s quite a bit of spread in model predictions for Saturday. It does seem pretty clear that we’ll have a strong marine push. That’ll shift the steadiest wind to the east of the Cascade Crest. Current forecast: 25-28 and subject to change. Have a great week!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

As of Monday, 8/17, the following trails are closed due to fire danger: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and andy lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
