Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s not much wind out there this morning, but don’t despair: if there was enough wind for you yesterday with a little to spare, you’ll be able to get on the water today. We started at 7am with a gradient of .07 from PDX to DLS. River flow is 136kcfs, and river temp is perfect for swimming: 71 degrees. We’ll see a slow build to 15-19 from Cascade Locks to Mosier this afternoon with a touch less near Hood River.

Wednesday looks very similar to today as not much changes in the overall setup (thanks, rex block). We’ll once again see light westerlies early in the day with 12-15 or so in the afternoon between Cascade Locks and Mosier. Thursday looks slightly less windy as the offshore high pressure system weakens a bit. That leaves us with a forecast of light westerlies early and 10-13 in the afternoon.

Things get more interesting on Friday as (if?) this pattern starts to break down. A lingering low pressure system in northern California shifts eastward into southern Oregon. Keep in mind that this often happens later than models predict. That said, if the timing works out, we’ll see westerlies at 15-18 on Friday afternoon and a big marine push on Friday night.

Looking at the weekend, everything is dependent on the timing of that low pressure system and the overall rex block setup breaking down. If the timing is good, we’ll see rangy 28-33 on Saturday from Swell eastward. We may see a few marine clouds in Hood River on Saturday, shifting the strongest wind to the Rowena and Rufus areas. Sunday’s models currently show RAIN!!! in Hood River through midday (well, light showers, anyway). That will definitely shift the wind eastward. As of right now, Sunday afternoon looks like the kind of setup that’ll give us steady 26-30 east of The Dalles. Stay tuned! If nothing else, the 15+ degree temp drop over the weekend will be refreshing.

Random Morning Thoughts

Some things are worth the wait. Slow food, for example, is well worth waiting for. Standing over a hot barbecue and lovingly monitoring dinner will make the food more enjoyable. So also is the story of glace cherries, kissing cousin to Amarena cherries, those delightful bursts of flavor that arrive with expensive cocktails (or inexpensive soda water, if you’re me).

Making these sweet confections is a labor of love, patience, and careful planning during humid heat waves. While I’m not certain of the exact process used in making Amarena cherries, you can make an equally stunning imitation using a recipe for Glacé cherries.

It only takes 14 days.

There’s this thing about objects we acquire or create at a pace slower than our daily life (the pace of which is overwhelmingly fast, often). We appreciate these things more. We respect them more. Thinking long and carefully about purchases or meals not only improves our wisdom around consumption, it also improves our enjoyment of and conscious interaction with these things.

So, if you feel so inclined, pick up some Hood River Cherries (pie cherries or firm red cherries like Skeena work great), a big bag of sugar, and spend the next two weeks babysitting a developing pot of deliciousness. See what arises as you do this. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s another smoky morning – particulate matter 88. Temps will be near 70 this morning and in the upper 90’s this afternoon. Light to moderate west wind. No rainbows. Things look exactly the same on Wednesday and Thursday. Looking far ahead, a high temp of 84 on Sunday seems lovely. P.S. It’s going to be muggy the next three days.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and all other SDS and Kreps lands are closed from today on through the end of fire season. That’s when “significant rain” falls and the fire danger is considered over. Also currently closed: Dethman Ridge Road at Odell Creek and Highway 30 at Chenoweth Bridge. The second one has a bypass for bikes and pedestrians in place along The Dalles waterfront trail.

Upcoming Events

If you’re looking for something to do this evening, there’s pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 5:45. Bring a cooler filled with cold drinks if you can. At 6:30 tonight, there’s a community meditation in air-conditioned yoga samadhi.

Later this week, the band Kalimba plays Thursday at Families in the Park at Jackson Park in Hood River. Sounds like the Post n’ Pint and Post n’ Pinot bike rides will likely turn into a swimming party on Thursday. The Perseids meteor shower peaks in the northern sky with about 50 meteors an hour on Saturday and Sunday morning.

This week’s Movies in the Park are Sing at Jackson Park in Hood River Saturday night and The Princess Bride at Sorosis Park in The Dalles Saturday night. There are two running races this weekend – the Post Canyon 50k on Saturday and the Bridge of the Gods fun on Sunday. For something totally different, check out the Neon Classic Drag Races in Dallesport on Sunday or Vintage Dufur Days all weekend. King of the Hook has been rescheduled for THIS Saturday, 5-8pm at the Hook.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
