Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

As usual this time of year, models are bouncing around quite a bit with the forecasts. We continue with the plan of light to moderate easterlies for Tuesday and Wednesday, but we’re upping the duration of upcoming westerlies. No, sadly, we’re not upping the high temps accompanying those west winds!

Tuesday starts with light easterlies. The wind picks up to E 12-15 from Stevenson to Viento for a few hours mid-morning before backing off to less than 10mph in the afternoon. Rooster will be light and variable. River flow readings are 61-84kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 77F.

Wednesday morning brings E 20-25 from Stevenson to Viento with 10-15 at Rooster. Rooster holds until mid-afternoon when it drops to light/variable. The Stevenson-Viento stretch fades late morning to 15-20 and drops to 10ish in the afternoon. High temp: 78F.

Change arrives on Thursday as high pressure builds offshore and a dry cold front drops down from Alaska. It moves inland early in the morning. Now, this is a few days out, and the timing is likely to change. As of this morning…. we start Thursday with 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier. Midday: gusty 25-29 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Afternoon: gusty 27-31 from Viento to Avery with 20-23 at Stevenson. Wind at Swell will likely fall off too. Rufus may join in the afternoon – this is exactly the sort of setup where Rufus isn’t happening in the models but does happen in reality. High temp: 70F.

Models are now predicting gusty 24-27 Friday (59F), 30-40 east of The Dalles on Saturday (51F), and 22-26 on Sunday (52F). Fingers crossed for all that wind! Dust off your warmest wetsuit!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint and Post n’ Pinot are done for the season due to darkness. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Cycling

It’s dusty out there, but it won’t be dusty much longer! Hood River County has reopened all motorized trails to motorized use. Hospital Hill, Underwood, and Whoopdee have reopened. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding.

The road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. In theory, the Courtney Road closure was to end October 15th. Lemme know if you know if it has reopened. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
