Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s not much wind out there on this sunny Tuesday morning, but some Things will happen this afternoon to bump the wind up from the near-zero zone to the “let’s get on the water” zone. Our day started with a .06 gradient from Portland to The Dalles, sunny sky in Portland, flow of 190kcfs at The Dalles, and a river temp of 68 degrees.

As the day progresses, inland high pressure will start to break down, pressure will drop in the desert due to heat, and a low pressure system will move towards Vancouver. This will allow gradients to increase, although that offshore low will probably make the wind inconsistent. So… We’ll have 13-16 from Cascade Locks to Hood River starting around noon. The wind will slowly build after that to inconsistent 20-25 between Cascade Locks and The Dalles. The western Gorge (aka Stevenson area) will likely see the steadiest wind.

We’ll see more marine clouds in the western half of the region on Wednesday as the low pressure system shifts closer to Vancouver Island. We’ll still have a mixed bag of an offshore low area to the north and a high to the south with a bit of a weak front approaching the coast. This sets us up for 18-22 from Viento to Arlington to start the day. The wind will climb to inconsistent 22-26 from Cascade Locks to Rufus in the afternoon with the far-east Gorge seeing 15-18.

A strong marine push on Thursday morning will bring solid marine clouds as far east as Hood River. This will knock down the western Gorge wind for the first half of the day and probably keep the wind gusty in the western Gorge all day. We’ll have 15-18 east of Mosier in the morning with a quick build to 23-26 east of the clouds. It’ll probably take until noon for the clouds to burn off in Hood River and perhaps until early afternoon near Stevenson. When that happens, the wind will pick up to 23-26 from Cascade Locks to Arlington. As of right now, both Friday and Saturday look like light wind starts with 16-19ish in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

Our thoughts are tricky little bastards. They feel so real that we take them seriously. Thoughts are incredibly manipulative and convincing; due to their influence, we think of ourselves as good or bad, we worry about things we think might happen, and we create stories about our experiences that have a direct bearing on how we perceive ourselves. We place ourselves right in the middle of the thought-story, and live as if it were real.

STOP IT!

Thoughts are many things, but in a large part, they are an attempt to create meaning about and the perception of control over things that have happened, may have happened, or might happen. These stories are tyrants that limit our ability to react and respond freely in the world.

If we can step out of the story and look at our thoughts objectively once in a while, we can learn a lot about ourselves. Pick a day and set an intention to look at the themes that arise in your thoughts. Maybe there’s a self-critical theme, a worrying-about-the-future theme, a regretting-past-action theme… Once you spot these themes, they start to lose power. You can see them for what they are: mental constructions that limit you.

Don’t get me wrong – creating space between your thoughts and your awareness ain’t easy. But once you are able to do it, you might just find yourself giggling at all the silliness that your mind tosses your way. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

All the mtb trails locally are open. This will change next week when Hospital Hill and Whoopdee will likely close for the summer due to fire danger. Ride them now. Moto is now done for the season in Hood River County, as we are at IFPL 3. Today looks like a great day for road biking – light wind.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with dancing – a free community dance exercise class at 11 at the White Salmon Grange. At 5:45, there’s pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina. For something mellower, head to Yoga Samadhi at 6:30 for meditation led by the monks from Pacific Hermitage.

This week, all week long, is the Gorge Downwind Championships for standup paddle, surfskis, and outrigger canoes, based out of Home Valley. There are sailboat races in Cascade Locks Wednesday through Saturday, and a windsurfing race at the Hood River Event Site on Saturday. There’s also a meet and greet with Dave Kalama and Alex Aguera at Big Winds on Wednesday evening and free foilboard clinics on Thursday and Friday.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
