Gorge Wind Forecast

Several things changed in the grand weather picture over the last 24 hours, and that’s left us with less marine clouds than expected this morning. The wind is also less than expected, great if you’re planning a road ride, but not so great if you’re planning windsurfing, kiting, or some other sport requiring a fair bit o’ wind. That said, we should see the wind pick up late in the day as inland isobars tighten up.

So, for this morning, expect wind in the 5-10 range through the whole Gorge. Nothing will change east of The Dalles today – the wind will stay relatively light through this evening. As yesterday’s weather system shifts east during the day, the atmosphere will stabilize more, and the wind will pick up just a bit – we’ll probably see 10-13 by late morning and 13-16 this afternoon. That wind will be strongest between Cascade Locks and Hood River. Mosier will probably join in late in the day, but it’s likely that the Lyle-Doug’s stretch will stay in the 10-13 range.

As of this morning, models are predicting stronger wind tomorrow. This will be driven, in part, by an approaching weak weather system in the afternoon. That will make the afternoon wind rangy and a big unreliable. The day, Wednesday that is, starts with 18-22 between Viento and the Hatchery. By late morning, perhaps early afternoon, the wind will build to rangy 23-28 between Cascade Locks and The Dalles, with the Rufus area also likely to join in. The most consistent wind will be near Stevenson, but there will also be periods of decent wind at all other locations mentioned above. It’s also likely that the Hood River area will end up with stronger, steadier wind than the Swell area.

That weak weather system moves through on Thursday morning, dragging more marine clouds into the western half of the region. The day starts with westerlies at 18-22 between viento and Mosier. It’s like the afternoon wind will be a bit inconsistent. As of right now, the forecast suggests up-and-down 21-25 between Cascade Locks and The Dalles.

In the somewhat useless long-range forecast, we have the following: Friday looks like 25-29. The weekend currently looks like the sort of setup where the wind will beat the models by a lot; strong offshore high pressure combines with a heat low inland for westerlies somewhere in the teens to low 20’s. We’re going to have to wait and see before making a forecast.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m sitting here this morning looking at my beautiful view and noticing a couple of things in my internal world. First, I feel super anxious. Second, I feel a delightful sense of well-being. Those two seem like they should be incompatible, right? But they’re both there, because our minds and nervous systems are complex.

One of the keys to staying balanced when difficult emotions arise is not fighting with the emotion, having patience with it, in other words. Another is understanding, on a visceral level, what suffering is “just there”, and what suffering we are creating. Developing that sort of self-knowledge allows us to change what we can and patiently sit with whatever has just arisen out of the ether.

Essentially, this is application of the serenity prayer: knowing what we can change, what we cannot, and having the courage, patience and wisdom to know the difference. I believe that self-study is the key to the kind of deep wisdom that allows us to lessen our suffering.

That brings me back to my complex emotional state. Having a sense of well-being in the face of anxiety is possible because I’m not fighting it. If your muscles were sore because you worked out yesterday, you wouldn’t fight that, would you? You might take some ibuprofen, a hot bath, get a massage, or so something else that might help. Same goes for emotional pain: fighting won’t help. Doing things that might help (without an expectation of result) will: breathe, meditate, get some exercise, talk to a friend… have patience. And if the emotional pain goes on and on, talk to a professional, because that can help too. =)

You’re awesome, no matter what’s up for you now. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a mostly clear morning with just a few high clouds, and it’ll be a sunny day. Temps will be near 50 early and near 80 this afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks just a touch warmer: mid 50’s early and mid 80’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks just like Wednesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and all other SDS and Kreps lands are closed from today on through the end of fire season. That’s when “significant rain” falls and the fire danger is considered over. Also currently closed: Dethman Ridge Road at Odell Creek and Highway 30 at Chenoweth Bridge. The second one has a bypass for bikes and pedestrians in place along The Dalles waterfront trail.

Upcoming Events

This evening’s events include Australia’s favorite sport, Rugby, at the Hood River Marina at 5:45. At 6:30, there’s meditation at Yoga Samadhi, led by the monks from Pacific Hermitage. The Skamania County Fair and Timber Festival kicks off tomorrow and continues through Saturday, and there’s kid-centered mountain biking at Family Man tomorrow evening.

Coming up Friday through Sunday, Cascade Locks is hosting the RS Aeor Championship sailboat races and Marble Mountain Snopark, hosts the St. Helens international festival of trails with riding and trail work parties.

This Saturday’s outdoor movies are Pete’s Dragon at Jackson Park and Guardians of the Galaxy at Sorosis Park. Other fun things this weekned: the Oregon Bigfoot festival in Trout Lake on Saturday and Goldendale’s pre-eclipse party on Sunday as party of the Festival of Wheels happening all weekend.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
