Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Sunny, cold weather continues on Mt. Hood through Wednesday morning before temps start rising enough to (possibly) impact snow quality. The next round of snow looks to arrive Saturday afternoon into Monday morning with up to two feet for that time period.

For Tuesday, expect a cold, dry mountain morning with temps in the teens early and low 20’s in the afternoon. The freezing level will be 0′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 0-500′ overnight. Wind: E 5-10 in the morning, E 10-15 in the afternoon, and ESE 20 overnight.

Wednesday looks clear and dry and arid as the humidity plummets with the arrival of dry air from the north and east. The freezing level will be 0-500′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon (possibly as high as 6000′ with a developing inversion), and 5500′ overnight. Wind: ESE 20 all day, SSE 20 in the afternoon, S 10 overnight.

Thursday starts clear and dry and stays that way through sunset. Clouds move in overnight. Models disagree on whether there will be any precip. Call it a few flurries at best. The freezing level will be 5500′ during the day, 1500′ in the evening, and 1000′ overnight. Wind: S 10 early, SW 10-15 in the afternoon, WSW 20-30 in the evening, and W 30 overnight.

Friday looks mostly cloudy with perhaps some light snow and perhaps nothing at all. The snow level will be 1000′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. Wind: W 30 in the morning, NW 20 in the afternoon, and WSW 10 overnight. Snow moves in Saturday night along with increasing wind. About a foot of snow falls overnight followed by 6-10” sunday daytime and 5-6” Sunday night. While the sounding model (the usual source of wind predictions) isn’t predicting a shutdown Sunday, other sources disagree. Like me – I disagree. Very strong offshore high pressure combines with a 50-70kt 850mb jet for a darn good chance of a lift shutdown Sunday afternoon. Now… that’s all very far out in the future to be predicting, and it could change. But let’s do keep an eye on it!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Inland cold and high pressure over the Northwest sets up east wind for the next few days. For Tuesday: east 10-15 in the morning at Rooster and Stevenson with 20-25 in the afternoon. Other locations: east 5-10 in the afternoon. Wednesday sees easterlies at 40-45 in the morning near Rooster and Stevenson and 25-30 in the afternoon. Thursday starts with east 30-35 and fades to E 5-10. Looking long-range, models LOVE the idea of NUKING westerlies on Sunday afternoon with a high temp around 50.

Cycling

With temps into the upper 20’s this morning (Tuesday), trails will have freeze-thaw. It’s possible lower Syncline will be a-ok because it’s so dry. From the fence line up, you’re likely to encounter freeze-thaw. Ride it an you’ll do significant and permanent trail damage. Anywhere else… stay under the trees or you’ll have the same problem: mud and easily damaged trails. Consider gravel grinding or road biking in the sunshine today instead. High temp: 50ish.
