Gorge Wind Forecast

This week starts with easterlies, goes calm on Wednesday, and then sees a return to westerlies on Thursday with caveats. For Tuesday, morning wind will be 25-30 near Rooster and 20-25 from Viento to Stevenson. We’ll see Stevenson build to 25-30 before fading to 15-20 in the afternoon. The rest of the Gorge starts with light wind. Widespread easterlies, all the way to Arlington, pick up to 7-11 or so this afternoon. River flow is 110kcfs and temp is 70 degrees.

Wednesday looks light and variable all the way through mid-afternoon. If we’re lucky and the timing is right, there will be a late westerly breeze at 8-11 or so, just enough to cool things off and maybe get some foils out on the river.

A weak weather systems moves through late Wednesday into Thursday. Marine clouds increase in Portland, but instability increases too. This makes for a tricky forecast, not just due to thunder chances, but also due to day-to-day inconsistency between models. Generally speaking, it looks like the wind will be in the 18-22 range from Stevenson to Mosier with 12-15 out east. Afternoon wind will likely be in the gusty 22-25 range from Stevenson all the way to Arlington. That said, if thunderstorms kick off, and there is a chance all day long, the wind forecast is both moot and unreliable.

Offshore low pressure continues to keep us under SWish flow through the weekend, making for moderate and gusty westerlies. At least it will be windy, as the last swap meet of the season is Saturday at Luhr Jensen, and Monday is both Labor Day and Labour Day, meaning we’ve got a long holiday weekend filled with westerlies.

Hood River Weather Forecast

A clear and arid morning gives way to a hot and dry afternoon. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and low 90’s later. Light east wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks clear in the morning with high clouds and a wee chance of thunderheads in the afternoon. Thunderstorm chances and humidity increase overnight – great night for AC. Temps will be near 60 early and in the mid 90’s later. Light and variable to light west wind. No rainbows. Thursday brings a good chance of a colorful sunrise and thunderstorms during the day. Temps will be near 70 early and in the mid 80’s later. Muggy. Moderate westerlies. 16% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

For road bikers: chip seal along Highway 30 from Mosier eastward just had a layer of sticky oil added to the top. Reports are that it could use some time to cure before it’s good for biking. Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through the beginning of September. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). The kids bike race is still on this Saturday morning at Family Man. As for Kreps/SDS lands, no word since the rain… they haven’t issued a closure yet!

All other trails are open – I received confirmation of Huffman Peak too. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
