Tuesday. Great day for fishing. Great day for cycling. It’s just a great day all around!

DSC_5127
Today looks like a light wind day, meaning the fish counts are just as important as the wind forecast. Unfortunately, the fish count website was down this morning when I went to get those numbers. We’ve been averaging just over 20,000 Chinook and between 3000 and 4000 steelhead each day, so there are a lot of fish. Along with those fish, expect light and variable wind this morning with westerlies at 10-13 or a touch more this afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off with less than 10mph of west wind and equally large numbers of fish and fishermen. As a weather system passes to the north mid-afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up to 20-23, first at Stevenson (where it shall remain 20-23) and then at Swell, Hood River, Mosier and the Rowena stretch. It’s likely that the wind at Swell will only last for an hour or so before fading.

Expect west wind at less than 10mph all day on Thursday. As of right now, models say E 22-25 on Friday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been thinking more about that article I linked to yesterday, the one about Pete Carroll’s coaching practices. More than once in the article, the author used the term “new-agey” to describe the Seahawks’ use of counseling, meditation and yoga to improve performance and morale.

New-agey? It seems the world moves too fast sometimes for people to change their notions of mainstream behavior. After all, gay marriage is now legal, pot is now legal, and the belief in the separation of church and state (at least on one end of the political spectrum) is eroding at an alarming rate. And all this (and more) has happened in just the last few years!

Approximately 20 million Americans practice yoga, and 44% of the people who don’t would like to try it (Yoga in America, 2012). Approximately 19 million people meditate (NCCIH, 2015). Strangely, I was unable to find the number of people in the USA who speak to a counselor, psychologist, or psychiatrist (20% of Brits have) but I bet it’s a lot, especially now that we have mental health parity.

And yet, a highly respected periodical is still referring to these things as new-agey. Times have changed, my friends. And the rate of change seems to be growing (maybe due to all that information out there?). What outdated beliefs do you hold? What outdated beliefs can you shift? ‘Cuz the last thing you want is to be sitting around in your rocking chair saying, “Kids these days…”, right? Go try something new(agey) today, make sure your worldview is changing with the times, and have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

Assuming there would be some Nothing in the sky this morning, I wandered outside to look. There was no Nothing. Instead, there was nothing but a lot of stars and a crescent moon. That means we’ll have a sunny day today with just a few passing high clouds this afternoon. Temps will be right around 50 early and in the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind.

Tomorrow looks sunny early with a few clouds in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the low 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late. No rainbows. Thursday looks sunny with light wind and temps in the mid 50’s early and upper 80’s in the afternoon. No rainbows for the three day period.

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s not much to say here other than the fact that I really need to get out biking because I’ve seen evidence on Facebook of both boletes and chanterelles. In road biking news, today looks great, tomorrow morning looks great, and all day Thursday looks great. Light wind n’ sunshine. What more could you want?

Northwave’s Locals’ Week Deals

It’s been a long and busy summer here in the Gorge, and Northwave would like to welcome you to Local’s Week! Live here? Your playground belongs to you again now that the kids are back in school, the teachers have returned to work, and the White Sprinter Vans are starting to hibernate for the winter. To celebrate, Northwave is offering sales on sails AND 15% off all sail repairs for all brands of sails. My favorite: the new window. If your window is cloudy, and you can’t see through it any more, get a new one. Not only will you be able to better see the other sailors, kiters, SUPers, and surfskis around you, you’ll also have a better view of the unicorns, rainbows, and Gorge scenery. Trust me on this one – it’s about $50 for a new window and worth every penny.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include pickup rugby at 6 at the Hood River Marina, tri practice in Rowena at 6, Manbo’s Fun Ride from Mountain View Cycles to Mosier at 6:15, and free community yoga in Mosier at the senior center at 7. There’s also community mindfulness meditation practice at Yoga Samadhi tonight at 6:30. If you want more info about that last one, feel free to email me. There’s also a Bernie Sanders birthday party fundraiser at the Hood River Middle School tonight. At last count, 72 people has RSVP’d on Facebook, but don’t worry… Bernie can’t win… or can he? #yeshecan #yeswecan

Coming up this weekend, The Dalles has the Aluminum Man triathlon and Duathlon on Saturday. Hood River County has a trail work party on Saturday to start building another 2 miles on the 170 trail near Kingsley Resevoir. At Timberline on Saturday, there’s a cleanup on the Sandy River.

The Rural Rampage adventure bike race for kids and adults is in Hood River on Sunday, and that one benefits the Hood River Wrestling Club and the Columbia Gorge Ecology Institute.

Have an awesome day today!
