Sunday. Sunrises, sunsets, and great biking weather!

ZabelRainbow
It’s amazing how quickly things can switch around here. We went from nuking wind yesterday to zero wind and zero gradient this morning. Expect light wind this morning with a slow build midday to up-and-down 13-16 this afternoon. Today’s wind will show up from Stevenson to Hood River first, and then fill in out to Doug’s, Rowena and Rufus later. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Expect a light west wind start to Labor Day, perhaps 7-11 from Viento to Mosier. We’ll see a slow build to 13-16 in the afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles. Expect light wind on Tuesday morning. As a weak front swings through during the morning, the wind will bump up to 17-21 from Stevenson to The Dalles by early afternoon.

As of right now, it looks like the wind will turn offshore after Tuesday and remain that way for several days.

Random Morning Thoughts

After reading about the refugee crisis in Europe, I’m thinking about in-groups and out-groups this morning. Our brains are wired to dismiss out-groups and to protect our own people. It takes a conscious effort to welcome and learn about people of other backgrounds, skin colors, cultures and other external characteristics.

It takes time to feel completely at home with people who are not of our in-group. Our initial, genetically coded, reaction is often fear, mistrust, or unease as we struggle to find common ground. And even when we have common ground, the unfamiliar appearance of people triggers our alarm systems. It’s completely natural, and it’s completely okay to have these feelings.

This happened to me recently with a group of people who dress in a strange manner. But after taking quite a bit of time to get to know them, I’ve realized they are my people, perhaps even more so than the jeans and t-shirt crowd.

It’s a good lesson for me. The refugee crisis is a good lesson for all of us. The world is growing more crowded, and we’ll encounter more and more people who are unlike us. It’s time to sit with that mistrust and unease and attempt to learn and connect. And if you’re feeling uneasy with someone unlike you, it’s okay to say that. Transparency is a powerful thing. May you connect with some totally awesome people who are totally unlike you today. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

As I was writing the weather forecast this morning, I was looking at a gorgeous sunrise outside my window. That reminded me of how awesome this place is, and it also reminded me to cop to the fact that I screwed up yesterday’s weather. I said no rainbows. There was a rainbow at the end of the day. So, please accept my sincere apologies for that.

Today will be at least partly cloudy all day as a weak warm front pushes through. Expect temps in the mid 40’s early and the upper 60’s this afternoon. Light wind. 4% chance of rainbows. 79% chance of a colorful sunset. Tomorrow looks mostly sunny (although there’s a slight chance of a partial Nothing early). Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Tuesday looks partly cloudy as a weak weather system pushes through. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late, 2% chance of rainbows. 69% chance of colorful sunset.

Road and Mountain Biking

Kosmo sent me a Falls Creek report the other day. According to him, the dirt was like velcro. I’m not sure if he meant the hook or loop side, but either way, it sounds pretty fantastic. The road biking will be great the next three mornings as well, with light wind each day. If you happen to be out in the woods, keep your eyes open for boletes; Celilo posted a photo of a dish using a king bolete the other night. Please share if you find any!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include a few by-donation yoga classes. There’s one at 9am at Yoga Samadhi, one at 4pm at Pure Yoga, and one at 6pm at Root Down Yoga. In between those classes, you can play pickup touch rugby at the Mosier school field at 3, you can ride bikes with the guys from Mt. View at 5:15, and you can play ping pong at the Hood River armory at 5:30.

There are two other events today: There’s the Dirty Sellwood bike ride. That one leaves Dirty Fingers early, goes for 117 miles, and returns to the shop late, followed by an afterparty at neighboring Kickstand Coffee. Today’s the last swap meet of the season for windsurfers and kiters, happening at the Luhr Jensen parking lot starting at 8am.

If you’re looking at tomorrow, it’s the annual Cross-Channel swim and the Timberline Mountain Music festival. Coming up next weekend, it’s the Rural Rampage bike race. The following weekend is the Gorge Kids Triathlon and the accompanying Music Festival of the Gorge.

Have an awesome day today!
