Tuesday Gorge wind forecast & Gorge weather forecast: westerlies all week with thunderstorms and wraparound moisture possible

Hi friends! For those who were patient, there was a heck of a nice session at the Hatch yesterday evening. Lighter westerlies are forecast today. As we head into Wednesday and Thursday, atmospheric instability interferes with the reliability of the forecast and the wind. Friday, however, looks good as a dry cold front sweeps through…

GORGE WIND FORECAST

SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! For those who were patient, there was a heck of a nice session at the Hatch yesterday evening. Lighter westerlies are forecast today. As we head into Wednesday and Thursday, atmospheric instability interferes with the reliability of the forecast and the wind. Friday, however, looks good as a dry cold front sweeps through and offshore high pressure builds. Westerlies linger into Saturday, and then predictability drops as at least some of the models hint at a warming trend, but don’t agree on associated wind or lack thereof.

Tuesday kicked off cloudy to the west and sunny for the central Gorge with pressures of 29.90/29.85/29.79. Along the coast โ€“ a weak low. Offshore: strong high pressure. Not much assistance is forecast from thermals today as The Dalles is only forecast to reach 70 degrees. Early westerlies were generally in the 14-17mph range form Viento to Arlington. East of Doug’s, the wind will drop to 10-13mph midday, so let’s rule out the eastern Gorge for today. Between Mosier and Doug’s, or The Hatch and Doug’s if the clouds burn back, we’ll see a period of 16-19mph midday. Stevenson is likely to stay under 15mph.

Afternoon wind falls to 13-16mph and fills in from Stevenson to Doug’s. My normal river flow site isn’t reporting today (and different sites report different numbers, strangely), but I was able to find another that said 148-231kcfs for The Dalles. River temp is 59.0F, and high temp forecast is SIX-SEVEN degrees for Hood River today.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

A complicated weather picture makes for a low-reliability forecast on Wednesday; we’ll have instability and uncertain cloud cover which can lead to uncertain thermal support. It’s likely we’ll see a true dawn patrol (prior to 8am) with 23-26mph between Viento and Mosier. The wind quickly drops to 19-22mph and fills in from Stevenson to Mosier with light wind to the east. In the afternoon, instability complicates the forecast. It’s possible we could see 22-25mph from Stevenson to Doug’s, but it’s also possible thunderstorms could shut us down. Either way, areas east of The Dalles stay light. High temp: 81F.

Elevated instability is forecast on Thursday. Models currently indicate a nice cap on the west side which gives some hope for wind. If things hold together, we start with 18-21mph from Stevenson to Arlington. Afternoon wind has the potential to build to 26-29mph from Stevenson to the Hatch with 28-32mph from Mosier to Rufus and 23-26 near Arlington. Fingers crossed. Zero promises on this one. High temps: 82F in Hood River and 91F in Pasco.

As I mentioned earlier, a better setup is forecast on Friday. All members of the Euro ensembles are in for a big day. As of this morning, they’re highlighting the zone from the Hatch to Rufus with 30+. Highs will be down about 10-20 degrees from Thursday. Saturday’s models have more range in them, but they still call for at least mid-20s. Sunday is very uncertain. It’s likely we’ll see a couple light days to start next week as high pressure and heat build. That’s okay with me, as I’m in a training all day online Monday and Tuesday. After that โ€“ lots of uncertainty, but certainly a hint of the westerlies returning! See you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

HYPERLOCAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE

THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! Interesting weather on tap for us this week as upper flow turns southerly, brings in the mugginess. This supports us a chance of thunderstorms. I hope my foster squirrel isn’t afraid of thunder! That’s right โ€“ TATAS is fostering a baby squirrel (okay, it’s a ground squirrel, but I didn’t want to tell you because they can be destructive creatures, and I don’t want to see hate or violence directed at a baby squirrel!). Anyway… cool weather is forecast today. Warm and muggy, potentially thunderstorm-prone weather is in the cards Wednesday and Thursday. It’s possible we’ll see wraparound moisture and actual rain, especially in the desert! On Friday, a cold front swings through and does a few things: 1) ends the mugginess; 2) takes high temps down 10-20 degrees; 3) makes it really windy; 4) makes Boardheads very happy.

Glenwood, Tehran, Havana, and today’s Gorge weather forecast

Tuesday kicked off with clouds to the west, sun between Mosier and The Dalles, and clouds to the east. Temps: 34F (Dufur), 38F (Glenwood), and low 50s in the lowlands. Forecast for our friends in Tehran, Iran: 83F and 11% humidity. Nice! Forecast for our friends in Havana, Cuba: 87F and 65% humidity. MUGGY! Highs today range from SIX-SEVEN degrees in Hood River to 70F from The Dalles into the desert. West wind builds to 15-20mph west of The Dalles with 10-15mph east of The Dalles. Wraparound moisture is possible tonight (coming from a low to our south). Lucky rain-possible areas: east of Mosier and south of the Nch’i Wana.

Wednesday’s Gorge weather forecast

Wednesday morning brings low clouds to the west and clear sky to the east. Atmospheric instability increases the clouds in the afternoon, and S/SE flow aloft drives the dewpoints into the mid 50s. MUGGY! West wind will be 20-25mph west of Mosier early with 10-15mph to the east. Afternoon wind will be around 20mph west of The Dalles and less to the east. All that said, there’s a chance of thunderstorms, which could result in random periods of gusty wind. Overnight, there’s another chance of wraparound moisture arriving from the S and E. This would particuarly impact areas east of Mosier and south of the Nch’i Wana. Highs on Wednesday range form the upper 70s west of Hood River to 80F near Hood River and 85F from The Dalles eastward.

Thursday’s Gorge weather forecast

Significant atmospheric instability will be present on Thursday along with warm, muggy, breezy (20-30mph) conditions. After a warm start โ€“ 50-60F โ€“ temps rise to 82F (west), 88F (The Dalles), and 91F (The Desert) unless cloud cover exceeds expectation, in which case it’ll be cooler. This is our most likely day for thunderstorms, so keep an eye on the sky and the radar.

Extended Gorge weather forecast

A cold front swings through on Friday. It’ll drop just a tiny bit of rain in areas west of Viento and drag some clouds into the rest of the Gorge. Highs will be down quite a bit in the west: Hood River is forecast to be 66F, down from 82F on Thursday. The desert remains nearly 80 degrees. This cross-Cascade temp gradient fires of strong west wind. Please, for the sake of all of us, don’t do any burning or mowing or other spark-causing activities on Friday. Cool, breezy weather continues on Saturday.

Models hint at a warming trend starting on Sunday with potentially hot weather next week. By Tuesday, the temp forecast for The Dalles is 80=90, but this particular model tends to underestimate highs. Beyond that, model uncertainty is massive -some sort of cooldown is forecast somewhere between Wednesday and Friday. That’s not so much help, is it? No, I didn’t think so! Safe travels. -TATAS
