Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies are finally taking a day off, but they’ll be back tomorrow. For Tuesday, expect light and variable wind early and W 5-10 this afternoon. It’s even possible the wind will stay less than 5mph all day long. River temp is 55 degrees and flow is 513kcfs.

Westerly flow increases on Wednesday, driven by cooler air and an afternoon marine push associated with an offshore low. This low will also lead to atmospheric instability in the afternoon, which we all know isn’t a great setup for wind. That said, we’ll start the day with 12-15 from Viento to Hood River. In the afternoon, we’ll have gusty 22-26 from Stevenson to The Dalles, likely strongest at Stevenson, Viento, and the Event Site.

Thursday sees the marine layer deepen. Thursday also sees atmospheric instability and thunderstorms (or at least thunderheads) to the south and east of Hood River. We might even see rain Thursday overnight. With all that in play, the wind is a bit difficult to predict, and will likely be unreliable. For now, let’s call it 16-19 from Viento to Mosier in the morning with 10-13 east of Mosier. In the afternoon, we’ll have gusty 21-26 from Viento to The Dalles. Stevenson may stay cloudy, which would lead to less wind there, and an upper low over the Columbia Basin may shut down the wind east of The Dalles.

Friday is also a big tricky, but the current forecast is 25-29. Saturday sees the atmosphere stabilize under strong westerly flow. Models agree on 30-35 Saturday. Models disagree on Sunday with 30-35 for the GFS and 20-25 for the ECMWF.

BONUS: Jones Tuesday: 21-24. Jones Wednesday: 23-26. Jones Thursday: 20-23. Sauvie’s Tuesday: 5-10. Wednesday: 13-16 late. Thursday: 10-13. Coast (north/central/south). Tuesday: 15-20/15-20/20-25, W swell 4′ @ 9 seconds. Wednesday: 10-15/light/not, W 6′ @ 11. Thursday: 5-10/light/not, W 7′ @ 11.
