SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Yesterday was a big day all through the Gorge. Hopefully you caught yourself some waves/bumps/swells. Lesser westerlies are forecast today. Make the most of them, and you’ll have earned the rest days that are coming on Monday and Tuesday. Speaking of rest… I’m going to take tomorrow off from forecasting since there’s not much to say for a couple days, and I need those morning hours to get gardening done while it’s cool!
Sunday started with pressures of 30.07/29.98/29.92, offshore pressure of 1027mb, and solid low clouds in the metro area. Models (and NWS) insists the clouds will dissipate, heat in the metro area will equalize with Hood River, and the wind will drop below 15mph quickly. If so, the model forecast of fading wind will hold โ models have westerlies down to 13-16mph or less by this afternoon with 10-13mph in the evening. I’m going with gut instinct instead of models today.
Dawn patrol wind was 21-24mph between Viento and Swell with 7-10mph near Stevenson (cloudy) and 12-15mph east of Hood River all the way to Arlington. Let’s stick with 21-24mph this morning from Viento to the Hatch with Stevenson, Hood River, and Mosier joining at 17-20mph. Wind will fade out east as heating increases. The eastern Gorge eventually goes calm or nearly calm. As the metro area heats up in the afternoon, westerlies will fade to 13-16mph, perhaps to 10-13mph, although that big a fade with this many morning clouds seems suspicious. Either way… get it early for the most certain results. River flow over the last 24 hours was 119-150kcfs (121-150 at Rufus), river temp is 64.8F, and high temp forecast is 84F for Hood River. Also, it looks like Weed Island Season started yesterday โ keep your eyes open for floating obstacles.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

Monday brings a rest day: calm in the morning, E 10mph near Stevenson midday, and calm or light/variable in the afternoon. High temp: 91F and sunny. Tuesday starts calm. Late in the afternoon, we could see westerlies at 14-17mph from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-13mph at Rowena. High temp: 95F and sunny.
Models suggest westerlies will return Wednesday and stick around through the weekend. This is unlikely to be The Cooldown You Were Looking For โ very active weather (including rain Friday/Saturday for some areas) with result in gusty, shifting wind. Even so… we’re looking at (subject to change) 21-24mph Wednesday, 27-30mph Thursday, questionable conditions Friday, and the potential for windier weather if a forecast low actually materializes and actually moves inland next Saturday. FWIW, temps will be cooler…. That’s it for now. See you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

Good morning, neighbors! We did a good job yesterday not starting any big fires! Yay, team! After today, the wind lets up for a couple days. Calmer conditions combine with more heat. Towards the end of next week, cooler temps and actual rain are in the cards โ models have been trending wetter. Not torrential, but probably at least 0.1โ. We’ll watch this closely for our friends growing cherries…
Glenwood this morning and weather for our friends around the world
Other things to watch closely: Glenwood. If you don’t keep an eye on Glenwood, they’ll try and have sub-freezing temps in the middle of summer. Today they made it down to 39 degrees before being stopped by the temp police (aka, Sol). Our friends around the world are mostly hot and muggy again:
Tehran, Iran: 99, sunny, 12% humidity
Havana, Cuba: 82, partly cloudy, 80% humidity
Muscat, Oman: 93, sunny, 66% humidity
Caracas, Venezuela: 73, partly cloudy, 79% humidity
Nuuk, Greenland: 40, cloudy with a chance of snow, 90% humidity
Gaza City: 82, sunny, 66% humidity
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada: 62F, cloudy with a chance of rain, 88% humidity
Today’s Gorge weather forecast
While it’ll be equally warm here today (84-89F) and equally sunny (after a cloudy start in the western Gorge), it won’t be muggy. Afternoon relative humidity falls below 20% east of Hood River and holds around 35% to the west. Wind: 20-25mph west of Mosier this morning with 10-15mph east of Mosier. Afternoon: 10-15mph west of Mosier and light/variable wind to the east.
Monday’s Gorge weather forecast
Monday will be hotter: 91 to the west, 92 in the desert, and 95 in The Dalles. Thankfully, the day will start at 50-55 degrees, giving you a chance to cool off your home. Close the windows when the outside and inside temps match. Wind will be calm most places most of the day with easterlies at 10mph near Stevenson mid-morning. Sky: mostly clear.
Tuesday’s Gorge weather forecast
A pretty sunrise is in the cards Tuesday thanks to high clouds. Early temps will be 55-65 degrees. By afternoon, we’ll be mostly clear. Temps range from 95F in Hood River to 99F in The Dalles and 96F in the desert. Wind will be dead calm to start and 15-20mph out of the west in the afternoon west of The Dalles.
Extended Gorge weather forecast
90+ degree weather continues on Wednesday, but we’ll have stronger westerlies to cool us off. Highs drop about 10 degrees on Thursday, and westerlies continue at 20-25mph. Model signals for rain Friday and Saturday have been increasing. Ditto for signals for much cooler weather โ highs around 70 degrees. Cool weather sounds nice. Rain is a mixed bag โ we need all the rain we can get after this dry winter, but we do not want rain on the cherries. Stay cool in the heat wave. Safe travels. -TATAS
