Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a cool and windy morning here in the Gorge, and the relatively cool weather and the wind will continue all day long. A trough of low pressure shifting to the east during the day will likely impact wind quality, making it gusty. That trough may also reinforce cloud coverage in the west; this remains to be seen. That could also have an effect on wind for the Laser Gorge Blowout today. Tomorrow looks windy as well, but not as windy. After that, gradients drop and temps begin to climb again, for another period of warm, not-so-windy weather.

So, for Thursday… We start with a marine layer in the west. Early gradients were .12 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc). Just looking at that, I conclude that your best bet today is someplace between Mosier and Rufus. That said… models suggest the wind will build to 28-32 from Mosier to Arlington today with 30-35 possible in the aforementioned best-bet region. Swell is a bit tricky due to clouds. Assuming the clouds will burn back, the forecast from Viento to Hood River is gusty 20-25 early, rising to 26-30 late morning and holding through early afternoon. Now… on to Stevenson… 13-16 early, rising to 24-28 this afternoon if/when the clouds clear. If you are recreating between Stevenson and Hood River today, watch out for Laser sailboats – today is the Laser Gorge Blowout. Wow… what a day for it!

Looking at Friday, we get a reinforcing shot of marine air from another weak system that moves east during the day. Given the timing, we’ll probably see a gradient/windspeed mismatch. The day starts with 10-13 everywhere. By early afternoon, we’ll have 18-22 near Stevenson with gusty 24-27 from Viento to Arlington. On to the weekend: W 7-10 on Saturday in the western Gorge only. W 7-10 early Sunday, likely becoming light easterly. I will be on vacation from Saturday through next Wednesday.

BONUS: Jones Thursday: Light. Friday: 5-8. Saturday: 20-23. Sauvie’s Thursday: 10-13. Friday: 5-8. Saturday: 8-11. Coast (north/central/south). Thursday: X/X/25-30, NW swell 4′ at 12 seconds. Friday: NW5/N10-15/25-30, NW 4′ @ 11 seconds. Saturday: 10-15/10-15/15-20, NW 3′ @ 10 seconds.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the fun things that can happen to us humans is that we get ‘triggered’ by something. In technical parlance, this means our fight-flight-freeze system gets triggered. We then do things that, in the moment, we perceive as protective. The problem is that we aren’t quite in our right minds.

When we calm down, we may find ourselves ashamed of what we’ve done. Maybe we drank, used drugs, lied, got violent, ran away, curled up in a ball on the floor, or did any number of things that left us asking, “Why the heck did I do that?” That’s the ideal outcome – many people just feel ashamed or regretful.

The key, when this happens, is to ask “Why?” and explore the reasons for our behavior. Bringing a sense of curiosity to the situation, perhaps a sense of amazement at and awe of our bad behavior can help us face our silliness. Exploring it will give us more power the next time we are ‘triggered’, and that can help us behave better. May you be calm and grounded. Have an awesome day.
